TAIWANESE ARTISTS AND PERFORMERS AT THE 2007 EDINBURGH FESTIVALS
Taiwanese artists and performers are to be well represented at this year's Edinburgh festivals. The Taipei Representative Office in the UK is proud to announce five diverse shows as part of the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Tattoo and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Edinburgh International Festival
Jardins Publics, an exhibition presenting large scale and intimate works in public spaces, features the work of Michael Lin, who is internationally known for his spectacular site-specific painted walls and floors that reproduce the vivid floral motifs of Taiwanese textiles on a vast scale. He is creating a large, specially-designed structure in East Princess Street Gardens that will catch the eye from afar and inject colour into the heart of the city. The exhibition will also feature the work of Dutch artist Apolonija Sustersic and Glasgow-based artist Richard Wright in different locations around the capital. Running from Friday 10 August until Sunday 2 September the exhibition is free and unticketed and opens daily from 11:00 until 19:00. For further information please see the full press release on the Edinburgh International Festival website: http://www.eif.co.uk/.
Edinburgh Military Tattoo
With a history of over 50 years, the Edinburgh Tattoo, one of the festival's most popular spectacles, features performers and musicians from Scotland and around the world. One of this year's highlights is the Taipei First Girls' Senior High School Honour Guard and Drum Corps. The corps consists of the highly talented student musicians of the Marching Band; the Honour Guard, who perform controlled and complex rifle drills; and the Colour Guard whose performance includes Taiwanese dance and flag spinning. This extraordinary team, which have been performing at prestigious events around the globe for over thirty years, manifests the courage, determination and vivacity of the youth of Taiwan. The Tattoo will run from Friday 3 until Saturday 25 August. For further details please see the Tattoo's website: http://www.edintattoo.co.uk/.
Edinburgh Fringe Festival
Illustrating further the international outlook of many Taiwanese artists, Yina Lin's play 5 Beats to the Bar, which is a part of the multiple award-winning Free Fringe, explores the challenges of cross-cultural relationships in a globalised world, as well as ways to overcome communication gaps. Before coming to the UK to study an MFA in Staging Shakespeare, Yina Lin worked as a professional theatre actress, television scriptwriter and Chinese teacher. Her new play draws on her experiences and presents us with a Taiwanese woman who finds an answer to the difficulties of a cross-cultural marriage through the plays of Shakespeare. You can see the play every day at 13:30 between the 4th and the 25th August at the Outhouse, 12A Broughton Street Lane, Edinburgh EH1 3LY. For more information please contact Yina Lin on 07913 682 745 or na20876@hotmail.com.
Kids and adults will love the Clownmime Group, whose Chaplin-esque performance combines French and Italian-style mime with circus skills and magic. Their new show A Wish sees the three clowns struggling to fulfil a young girl's dream to see snow despite having never seen it themselves. You can catch the clowns at Assembly @ Hill Street (Venue no.41), 19 Hill Street, Edinburgh EH2 3JP from the 5th to the 27th August (no show 15th August) from 10:30am until 11:30. For more information see the Fringe website http://www.edfringe.com/.
Finally, the raw edge of modern, unconventional Taiwanese art is brought to the Edinburgh Fringe by the multi-talented Mr Eyeball, with his latest creation The Eyeball Loves the Globe. Described as "poised between the nostalgic and the avant-garde, brimming with madness but also peacefulness", Mr Eyeball is a theatre-maker and brand designer, a singer, a writer and a fine artist. His new project, which commands a unique following, is an interactive performance of street theatrics and art, and is visiting Edinburgh on its world tour. Mr Eyeball will be wandering the streets of the capital between the 9th and the 18th August, so insider knowledge might be required to track him down. For further information on what to expect, however, visit his website www.eyeball.com.tw/index.htm.
