Pancake Tuesday
British people have chocolate at Easter and Turkey at Christmas, but do you know what they have today? Haha.......pancake!! It's Pancake Tuesday today and also Hash Wednesday tomorrow. Let see the little story about the Pancake day (Shrove Tuesday)
The traditions of Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent go back a long way. The period of Lent corresponds to the 40 days and 40 nights Jesus spent in the wilderness. Years ago, strict Christian's were forbidden to eat any dairy products in this period. Therefore, on Shrove Tuesday also known as Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday people made pancakes to use up their supplies of eggs, milk, butter and other fats. (text from Tiscali website)
Now we know something about the day. Let’s have a try to make some pancakes.^^
Recipe (basic pancake):
Ingredients
100 g (4 oz) plain flour
1 large egg
300 ml (1/2 pint) milk
Pinch of salt
Method
1. Sift the flour and pinch of salt into a mixing bowl and make a well in the middle. Break the egg into the well and whisk the egg so that it starts to incorporate the flour from around the bowl. Gradually add in the milk and continue to beat the mixture together until it is smooth.
2. Heat a little butter in a frying pan and pour about 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture into the pan. Tilt and move the pan until the mixture covers the base evenly. Cook on a medium heat for 30-60 seconds until golden. Flip the pancake and cook on the other side.
3. Keep the pancake warm and repeat with the remainder of the batter.
If you are quite instered in making the pancake, you can use your creation to try any flavour you like (ex: fruity or even savoury one).
Ok then, wish you have a great and tasty Pancake day!
