Last year, spending a lot of time to understand the relationship between linguistics and semiotics, I still get confused at the end of the semester. These days, when I am doing the readings for "Anthropology of Education", I found that some theories, used in Anthropology, still have strong relationship with language, especially, in the field of "structuralism."

考托福或GRE作文

前幾天，朋友在問怎麼考托福及GRE作文。

我的英文寫作並不是鼎好的那種，但是托福作文滿分及GRE作文5分。以一個外國人來說，算是不錯的分數。之前有修過教作文的課，知道一些技巧，也幫一些朋友準備過，成績也都不錯。現在把一些想法po出來，給需要的人參考看看。

During today' work shift, I overheard a workshop hold for USF language profs. Following is my note:

Activity One: Purchasing activity
Give students: 1.Links of department stores 2.Price range
Ask student: Write descriptions of the item.
---Learn vocabularies, price, reading skills----by using real material
Then they have different info---then information gap---the motivation to discuss
After they have the discussion, students can share the item on the websites.

The definitions of agency in the academic language are different from everyday use. Based on Ahearn, L (2000) Agency, agency is a way to talk about the human capacity to act. It focuses on how individual interact with the society ; both actionally and psychologicaly).

日本同學Kimi這學期拿了Susan Katz的literacy theory，這門課跟我在Berkeley上的內容基本上是類似的。不過Berkeley把它分成上下兩學期，由兩個教授教，Susan是一學期教完。

學期開始不久，我向Kimi借syllabus來看，一看後豁然開朗，我開始可以把Bakhtin, Vegasky, Heath, Scribner and Cole, Goody, Olson, Stree等，他們中間的線畫出來，他們不再是平面交措了，而是有先後影響。

UCB的那門課

幾乎每個知道我同時有在UCB拿課的朋友都會問一句，兩間學校的教育系有什麼不同。最膚淺的講，我會說最大的不同是，相對於Penn的教育是五星級旅館，USF的教室像平民住宅，UCB像貧民戶。其他科系我不是很清楚，但Tolman Hall完全像是個台灣有五十幾年歷史的中學校舍。
