Andrew Marvell (1621-1678)
馬韋爾(1621-1678)
英國詩人。生於約克郡的瓦恩斯蒂德,先後在赫爾和劍橋求學。1642-1646年間到過歐洲許多地方。他當過家庭教師,後成為密爾頓(Milton)的助手(1657)。以田園詩聞名,特別是《致怕羞的女主人》(To His Coy Mistress)。1659年成為下院議員,開始撰寫小冊子,並發表抨擊偏執現象及專橫政府的諷刺作品。卒於倫敦。

Had we but World enough, and Time,
This coyness Lade were no crime.

Now therefore, while the youthful hew
Sits on thy skin like morning dew,
And while thy willing soul transpires
At every pore with instant fires,
Now let us sport us while we may;
And now, like amorous birds of prey,
Rather at once our time devour,
Than languish in his slow-chapt power.
Let us roll all our strength, and all
Our sweetness, up into one ball:
And tear our pleasures with rough strife,
Thorough the iron gates of life.
Thus, though we cannot make our sun
Stand still, yet we will make him run.
