Japan, the United States and the Construction of Taiwan's Economic Miracle, 1895-1992

One often studies the surface dynamics of Taiwan's modern economic development. However, hidden behind the statistical record and the high level narrative that is usually focused on lies another story--and other more personal narrative that needs to be told to better understand that famous "miracle." It is story of the role of sets of outside actors and actors from within Taiwan who made the "miracle" possible. In this presentation I discuss the role of these actors. The include the Imperial Japanese government who created the foundation for Taiwan's industrialization, the United States AID Mission and the ROC's corps of well trained and talented technocrats who planned and implemented the administrative changes that made the process of widespread economic development possible and finally the American corporate executives, representing firms in the American consumer electronics sector, who moved their companies production facilities to Taiwan in the 1960s and 70s and help lead the Taiwanese small and middle sized entrepreneurs toward new, more productive and more sophisticated command/market economy.
