Outside of What?

It is an exhibition review of Martín Ramírez's show at The American Folk Art Museum from January 23, 2007 through May 13, 2007. It is an assignment of an art seminar class.

Outside of What ?
.
A Review of a Retrospective of Martín Ramírez at
The American Folk Art Museum
.
.
Martín Ramírez (1895–1963), who has 97 selected drawings in the show at The American Folk Art Museum, was a tragic Mexican American artist. As many immigrants at that time, in 1925, he left his homeland and family, came to California in order to have a better job. At first he worked in a railroad company and mines, but a few years later he lost his job because of the Great Depression. One day in 1931, he was picked up by police on the street then sent to a state hospital, where he received a diagnosis of manic depression. After that, he had been moved to several different institutions, and until his death, he was confined and never went back to Mexico. On pieced together paper with whatever materials he could get, he did over 300 drawings in his restricted life. Most of them have stressful structures and parallel lines depicting Mexican Madonnas, cowboys, trains, tunnels and landscapes, which deeply refer to the features of his homeland that only appeared in his dream. ...

The Armory Show

IMG_4916

As I told you last time, yesterday, my friends and I went to NYC to see The Armory Show. It was a beautiful day. Temperature was warm. Breeze, sunshine, and the expectation of coming spring was appearing everywhere in Manhattan. After we arrived the city, the first destination was MoMA, which had an exhibition about Edvard Munch(You can see the on-line audio tour in this website). His paintings were unique, but not good for health...ha. You know, most of them were full of sadness and despair. We stayed in MoMA from 10:30 to 12:00. After lunch, we took taxis to the Amory Show directly. The show was located at upper west, on two huge piers by the Hudson River. There were hundreds of galleries form all of the world gathering here and promoting their artists, and I heard French, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish and some other languages that I couldn't recognize. This afternoon, we spent about 4 hours at that place but just skimmed over in a rush. Since I couldn't stop taking pictures and it was too difficult to pay attention on each work, after coming back and looking through all my pictures, some of them I even couldn't remember that I had seen in the show. The Amory Show was good, although It was held by galleries and we can't deny that it was a commercial place. By these diverse and vibrant works, we could feel the fascination of art (and money), and it is what we have to build up for the environment of art in Taiwan. People love art here. They talk about art, buy art, be proud of art. And art itself not only feeds back by wealth, but also inspires design, architecture, fashion, and etc. Isn't it a good business? Of course, art is art itself, and too mush business thing doesn't mean good for it. However...ha...let's see those pictures!
.
See all pictures in flickr, or slideshow as follow.
.
After the Amory Show, do you know what? We went to Whitney Biennial because of the free Friday night. Wasn't it crazy? It was too much art in one day! I was so tired and just looked around so fest. This exhibition was very good. I think it was better than the Armory Show in certain ways. They were different, I know, but I will definitely go Whitney again. This exhibition will be still on in the end of May.
.
In the end of the day, we took the last bus at 11:30 back to New Paltz...I was exhausted...Gosh...my legs... ...
