			PHILIPS〈50 Great Recordings〉1994、95年左右，在DG與DECCA陸續開始這類標榜新轉錄技術與原始LP封面的系列發行時，年資上相對年輕許多的PHILIPS公司並沒有跟著作類似的發行，90年代中期PHILIPS主打的中價系列是〈SOLO〉系列(台灣翻作〈玩家〉系列)，以及始自PHILIPS名製作人Tom Deacon，號稱史上最暢銷的古典唱片系列的PHILIPS Duo系列。直到2001年時，PHILIPS公司為慶祝50週年（PHILIPS於1950年創立），遂挑選了50款代表性的錄音再版，是為〈50 Great Recordings〉，簡稱〈PHILIPS 50〉，亦以96 kHz/24 BIT轉錄。LP的原始封面一樣是『縮小擺中間』，背景則是LP與CD各半組成的一個圓。這系列純粹是紀念發行，而非延續性的系列發行，當然在首波的50份錄音後就沒有後續，而〈PHILIPS 50〉挑選出的50份錄音，即使有代表性，卻沒有太大的話題性，因幾乎大多都已在晚近的發行如Duo系列等中再版，似乎沒有珍貴的稀有錄音挖出，且有限的50份錄音的挑選，難免亦有罣一漏萬之虞。Mercury〈Mercury Living Presence〉1962年PHILIPS併購了Mercury，Mercury成為PHILIPS旗下的子公司。Mercury創立於1945年，和其他古典大廠不同的是，Mercury的音樂發行不限於古典，爵士、搖滾、鄉村、流行都有跨足，而相較於其他古典大廠，其旗下的陣容卡司也稍嫌薄弱；不過Mercury憑著其傑出優異的錄音技術，即使發行的古典唱片數量有限，無論在LP時期或是CD時期，仍佔有一席之地。Mercury發行的古典唱片數量不算多，也沒有分什麼系列或價位等複雜的問題（早期似乎有發行過類似高價版的版本，我手頭上的杜拉第指揮的Respighi古代歌謠與舞曲是不同系列的封面），長期以來市面上幾乎就是唯一的中價系列&mdash;〈Mercury Living Presence〉。也許也因發行品項不多，Mercury不玩系列再版之類的把戲，封面也幾乎直接沿用LP的原始封面；封面上方的標示則有些不同的小地方，LP時期封面上方的橫欄寫的是〈Living Presence Stereo 35MM〉，〈Living Presence〉的由來是來自50年代Mercury創先以優異的錄音技術錄下庫貝利克指揮CSO的展覽會之畫，這張唱片的錄音音效被《紐約時報》評為『如親臨樂團演奏現場』(being in the living presence of the orchestra)，Mercury公司便沿用〈Living Presence〉為系列名，從LP時期一直用到CD時期；而Mercury公司也在60年代率先採用35mm的磁性底片膠卷錄音，故在LP時期封面上方橫欄註明〈Living Presence Stereo 35MM〉，且橫欄設計成膠卷的造型，上下兩側有如膠卷旁一格一格的小洞，這設計則沒有沿用到CD，這設計有延用到部分的CD封面，但有些在CD的出版則沒有原膠卷設計(感謝berg兄指正)；而不同時期的有些LP封面則沒有〈Living Presence Stereo 35MM〉，有的只有簡單的〈Stereo〉字樣；而到了CD時期則全改為〈Mercury Living Presence〉，而前幾年則以SACD的形式再版。

	<title>【Cover Art】封面復古風 (上)</title>

			近數十年來，歐美等地樂壇興起了一股復古風與『仿古熱』；當然，將authentic performance翻譯為『仿古』或是『古樂』，都是有語病而有些失真的譯意，但翻成『原樣演出』或『原真運動』卻又覺有些過於文言饒舌；總之，這留給文字學者與翻譯專家傷腦筋，我們還是聽音樂、賞封面。90年代中，CD的問世才剛邁進第二個十年，唱片封面也開始跟隨著復古潮，幾家大唱片公司不約而同的搬出性質類似的系列企劃，內容主打公司過去高知名度的名人名演，各家老王賣瓜宣稱使用新開發的re-mastering技術，封面則使用LP時期的原始封面，只是每家公司總還要在原始LP封面外多玩點畫蛇添足的花樣設計，典型的如DG大花版(The Originals)的『斜斜歪一邊』，或是像EMI世紀原音系列(Great Recordings of The Century, GROC)的『縮小擺中間』；價位則多以中價位發行。來回味幾款過去十多年來各大廠唱片封面的『仿古』之作。DECCA〈The Classic Sound〉作為這類型系列的濫觴之一，DECCA曾有過一個短命的系列〈The Classic Sound〉，中文翻作〈留聲經典〉系列，最早的發行記得約在1994年左右；在LP時期，DECCA以傑出的錄音聞名於世，在樂界被稱之為笛卡之聲(The DECCA Sound)；這系列以〈The Classic Sound〉命名之，頗有與過往傳奇相呼應的意味在；其封面設計為：右手邊一縱向黑底白字&ldquo;The Classic Sound&rdquo;，原始LP封面縮小擺中間，並以原始LP同一張封面放大淡化作底；而奇怪的是，我手邊有兩張〈The Classic Sound〉系列，則是完全以LP封面為CD封面，似乎發行的早期曾以這種封面發行短期，之後才改為後來常見的設計樣式。〈Legends〉短命的〈留聲經典〉(The Classic Sound)系列撐沒有多久即中斷發行，隔了幾年，DECCA發行了接替的新系列〈Legends〉，中文翻為〈傳奇再現〉，記得約在1999年左右開始系列發行，以96kHz/24bit轉錄處理；封面設計在左上角有一類似臘印的&ldquo;Legends&rdquo;標示，Legends下方則註明錄音年代，不過封面的中間改擺演出者的黑白照，LP原始封面哪去了？原來，在booklet的封底，不再加上其他畫蛇添足的花樣設計，直接完全再現LP封面原始風貌，我手頭上幾張這系列的CD，就習慣直接將booklet反放，可直接欣賞LP懷舊封面的原貌。乍看這系列的封面，似乎沒有看到使用LP原始封面的影子將booklet反放，封面馬上完全重現LP原始封面雋永典雅風華DECCA的〈留聲經典〉(The Classic Sound)和〈傳奇再現〉(Legends)系列都是短命一族，但選出再版的錄音，大多是LP時期相當具代表性的名盤，如David Oistrakh的Bruch蘇格蘭幻想曲/Mozart交響協奏曲、Curzon、Backhaus、Rostropovich、Kertesz、Bohm等人的名演。

	<title>【Cover Art】北國風情畫</title>

			和其他的德奧作品錄音相較，卡拉揚在西貝流士的作品留下的錄音並不算多，交響曲方面在EMI留下六首錄音，獨缺第3號，而在DG又錄了一次4～7號，而其他的管弦作品和小提琴協奏曲則在EMI和DG都有錄音。其實在卡拉揚指揮生涯的最早年，就已經將西貝流士的作品納入自己的repertoire中了，其最早可回溯到1938年指揮的第六號交響曲。不僅如此，西貝流士在聽過卡拉揚指揮的第4、第5號交響曲後，曾致信製作人華爾特李格(Walter Legge, 1906 - 1979)大表讚揚，稱讚卡拉揚是唯一一位演奏出他心中意圖的指揮家。除了作曲家本人的背書外，卡老在DG版的第4、第6號交響曲錄音也是獲企鵝評鑑三星帶花殊榮的名盤。卡拉揚的西貝流士，少了點蒼涼粗獷，卻多了點典雅雋永，這當然不是西貝流士唯一且最好的選擇，但卻是我自己唱盤上常受邀轉動的座上賓。卡拉揚在DG時期的這幾張西貝流士錄音，一直是我相當喜愛的DG封面(不包括後來再版的封面)；來看看這幾張指揮帝王的北國風情畫的封面演變史：這是LP時期的封面：這是首版CD高價版時的封面，相當呼應樂曲的神韻與意境：&nbsp; 第一次的re-issue，高價降中價在畫廊系列(Galleria)再版，四首交響曲大風吹洗牌，高價版時期的(No.4+6)和(No.5+7)洗牌為(No.4+7)和(No.5+6)；1999年在大花版系列(The Originals)再版，2CD算一張高價，再一次降價成低價版；90年代樂壇吹起一股復古風，CD封面也跟著走仿古風，搬出LP原始封面，可惜大多不是『斜斜歪一邊』(如DG大花版封面)，就是『縮小擺中間』(如EMI世紀原音GROC系列)，仍舊盡失LP原始封面韻味。又過幾年，DG又再一次再版，推出Trio系列，卡拉揚沒錄的第1～3號由Kamu指揮的補齊，湊成交響曲全集一套，仍舊是低價位，但封面至此幾已毫無設計可言，任何東西恰巧成三的倍數者皆可當封面，我嘆，唉～！

			1994年BMG發行，共65張的海飛茲大全集中，皆以海飛茲的照片為封面，其中只有三張例外，來看看其中的兩張：你可能也似曾相似，在早期的許多CD中，印象中似乎看過不少張風格相仿的唱片封面。繪製這些封面的，是猶太裔美國諷刺畫家Al Hirschfeld(1903 - 2003)。Al Hirschfeld的畫風獨特而令人印象深刻，他也被視作是當代諷刺畫家中深具影響力的人物之一，其風格影響其後許多的漫畫家與諷刺畫家。Al Hirschfeld的諷刺畫大多以簡單的黑白線條構成，很少使用色彩、陰影、或網點，而他的人物畫總會以最簡潔的線條捕捉住主角的特色與神韻。通常成為一般諷刺畫家筆下的主角時，大多諷刺、揶揄、甚至感覺被侮辱的負面成分居多；而Al Hirschfeld不會有太過刻意的誇張與扭曲，且要成為Al Hirschfeld筆下的主角，大多也象徵其在某個領域裡已有相當的地位或影響力，所以Al Hirschfeld常被稱為同時代諷刺畫家中的&quot;nicer caricaturist&rdquo;，能成為其筆下作品的主角，反而應覺榮幸。

			唱片封面藝術，起初雖只是衍生自聽覺感官媒介的一種附屬品，但回顧其走過超過半個世紀的歷史，卻也可歸類成自成一格的藝術領域。吾輩等身處後CD時代的樂友們，每每聊起唱片封面設計，總不免會緬懷起LP時期典雅美觀的唱片封面，遙想起那個封面藝術的golden age。LP黑膠唱片(long-playing record)約在1948 - 1950陸續在歐美國家問市；在40年代為主流的78轉唱片(78 r.p.m. shellac -coated records)，可以說幾乎完全沒有唱片封面設計可言，僅僅將唱片放入薄薄的、類似牛皮紙袋的封套當中，再蓋印上曲目與演奏者姓名而已。當然，時處於二次大戰前後，百廢待舉、技術受限而物資缺乏的時空背景也是原因之一。即便如此，早在40年代，美國的Columbia公司仍早已經發現，經過設計而美觀的唱片封面，能大大的捉住消費者目光，進而大幅度的提高唱片銷售量。這個市場發現與未來唱片封面藝術的發展，應歸功於一位Columbia公司年輕的藝術指導，現代唱片封面藝術之父 ─ Alex Steinweiss (1917 - )。1939年，Alex Steinweiss才23歲，即當上了Columbia公司的第一位藝術指導，並大膽向公司提出唱片包裝的改革想法，而時間與事實證明了Alex Steinweiss的創意與遠見；1950年以前，Alex Steinweiss的作品幾乎都在Columbia (在40年代後期有在其他幾家公司留下零星作品)；這時期剛好介於78轉唱片與LP的過渡，這時期的唱片封套仍沿用78轉唱片的包裝，用單薄的牛皮紙袋，開口朝上的封套，而封面的設計也有所謂的『套版』，即同樣的封面，只在固定的位置印製上曲目與演出者大名，這應算是最早期的唱片封面設計之一，下圖左側是Oscar Levant演奏葛利格鋼琴協奏曲的LP，右圖則是Milstein演奏Mendelssohn小提琴協奏曲的CD再版。Alex Steinweiss的貢獻，不僅在隨著錄音技術一路進步的封面設計，LP時代的唱片封套設計(開口由上方改為側面、材質由牛皮紙袋改為硬紙卡)、以及後來LP封套的gatefold設計，皆是出自Alex Steinweiss之手。在邁入50年代之際，Alex Steinweiss有個應算是無心插柳柳成蔭的設計，他將自己簽名的草寫字體放入封面設計之中，竟也另成風格，甚至申請了版權，名為&quot;Steinweiss Scrawl&quot;。而從50年代開始，Alex Steinweiss除了Columbia公司之外，也開始為更多唱片公司設計封面，包括DECCA、London、PHILIPS、RCA、Everest、以及CD時代的樂友可能會較為陌生的傳奇廠牌之一 ─ Remington。Remington的唱片中藏了不少名家名演，像小提琴家Mich&egrave;le Auclair、鋼琴家Jorg Demus、Edward Kilenyi、Jorge Bolet、大提琴家Gaspar Cassado等，很可惜這些錄音在CD時代難見天日，除了好挖老錄音的日本版以外。(Remington的詳細介紹可參閱Rudof A. 			卡拉揚密碼？日前blue97老大在網誌再次貼出了Karajan在DG的馬勒錄音的LP原始彩虹封面，二月份的MUZIK中黃裕昌兄的專文中亦有刊出，封面與音樂，表裡相互襯托呼應，絕美至極；有幾位樂友與前輩也提出了封面彩虹是否呼應/象徵其錄音的看法，相當有趣。就像近年來許多人熱衷於在名畫中尋找如『達文西密碼』般的訊息一般，當年的唱片封面設計，是不是隱藏著一些設計者的巧思，也許永遠是無解的題，也或許只是後人的想像附會，但至少為那個美好年代留給了愛樂者更多想像的空間與欣賞的角度，這，也是另一個近年中低價或大全集再版所體驗不到的樂趣。

			古典CD標準演化史&nbsp;古典CD的演化，大多遵循幾個rules走，雖然不是鐵則，卻也適用大多數的情形了：&nbsp;1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 高價變中價，中價再降為低價，低價總有一天變成廉價。2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 佔收藏空間的體積越來越省。3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 聲音『普遍』越轉越差（我是說『普遍』喔，沒有一竿子打翻一船人，以免引起論戰）。 4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 封面設計越來越醜。
