派屈克從小受到舞蹈家母親的影響，自幼在芭蕾舞校習舞，高中還身兼體操好手及足球健將。他原本計劃進入芭蕾舞壇，卻不幸在足球比賽受了傷，他只好被迫接受戲劇訓練，轉進百老匯演出音樂劇，一連演出了《火爆浪子》等劇，頗受矚目，也因此遲至二十七歲時才演出處女作《美國冰宫》（Skatetown,USA）。接著演了幾部戲分不多的電影《長驅直入》、《小教父》等；一九八五年他在迷你影集《北與南》（North and South）中，扮演命運乖舛的南方軍官，表現精彩令他初獲矚目；該影集當時也在華視每周日晚間播出，收視不賴。

一九八七年他主演小成本歌舞片《熱舞十七》，描述他身為舞蹈老師竟與女學生因舞生情，在小鎮引發軒然大波。推出前本來不被看好，沒想到意外大受歡迎，全球竟然熱賣了70億6200萬元台幣；多才多藝的他，填詞演唱的抒情曲《她像風一樣》（She's Like the Wind）被選為該片插曲，還拿下美國告示牌單曲榜第3名。

當然他最知名的作品，還是一九九○年與黛咪摩爾（Demi Moore）合演的《第六感生死戀》（Ghost）。該片描述人鬼相隔的淒美戀情，配上黑人靈媒琥碧戈德柏（Whoopi Goldberg）的爆笑串場，不僅賺盡天下有情人眼淚，拿下美國當年終票房亞軍（僅輸《小鬼當家》），全球賣座還超過170億元台幣。派屈克與黛咪在片中熊抱捏陶的畫面，也成為銀幕經典鏡頭，連「星爺」也與張曼玉偷學諧仿。

該片的賣座，還助長一九六五年的老歌《奔放的旋律》再度走紅，證明音樂與影像搭配的力量無與倫比。一九六二年由比爾麥德利（Bill Medley）與巴比哈特菲德（Bobby Hatfield）組成的「正義兄弟」（The Righteous Brothers）二重唱，曾在六○年代紅極一時，當時他們最紅的歌《You’ve Lost the Lovin’ Feelin’》與《(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration》，分別拿下雙周與三周告示牌單曲冠軍，《奔》曲只拿下第四名。但《第》片出現後，局勢丕變，《奔放的旋律》迅速成為他倆最知名的代表作。

甚至這張由《阿拉伯的勞倫斯》配樂大師莫利斯賈赫（Maurice Jarre），調製的既驚悚又抒情的小品配樂，也完全被忽略。不過，這張也並非莫利斯的佳作，在專輯中，扣除《奔放的旋律》外，他先以主題旋律《Ghost》勾勒出風雨欲來的氣氛，詭奇、大量的銅管樂磅礡出現，在農曆七月聽來真令人膽戰心驚，其他則各以一段旋律闡釋各個主角的心境轉折，聽來稍嫌平淡，難怪會被主題曲搶盡風頭。

派屈克因《熱舞十七》與《第六感生死戀》兩度入圍金球獎音樂或喜劇類最佳男主角獎，演藝生涯爬上顛峰。九○年代後，他少有賣座片，銀幕表現卻一樣精采。一九九五年男扮女裝演出喜劇片《豔倒群雌》，3度角逐金球獎影帝，儘管未獲獎，但他的演技早被肯定。

去年初當他驚傳罹患胰臟癌第四期時，醫生一度宣判只剩五星期可活，但他不服輸，還跟家人說：「那我們可有硬仗要打了。」撐過一年的他，今年初接受ABC新聞網主持人芭芭拉華特斯訪問時還說：「我大概只剩兩年可活；但希望能夠多活五年。」只可惜他奮力搏鬥病魔，無奈仍回天乏術。

《熱舞十七》與《第六感生死戀》的瀟灑身影，也永存影迷心中。
