七○年代的美國，女權運動風起雲湧，芭芭拉有點傻大姐的銀幕性格，雖然為自己理想與感情爭取權益，但既不像珍芳達（Jane Fonda）太「躁進」嚇到保守派，也不像茱麗安德魯絲（Julie Andrews）天真地不解世事，所以她從《妙女郎》（Funny Girl）大紅特紅後，受歡迎程度持續不墜。

她從百老匯轉戰影歌壇大受歡迎，所灌錄的專輯也是以美聲派為主，儘管她以《People》專輯站穩腳步，但接下來專輯卻逐漸每下愈況，一方面曲風不夠大眾，另一方面風起雲湧的搖滾風潮，也讓她的光環多少遭受影響。於是她選擇「跟上潮流」，開始改唱搖滾歌曲。照唱片公司官方資料顯示一九七一年專輯《Stoney End》改走搖滾路線引發諸多樂評抨擊，不過，我覺得倒是她前一張、一九六九年的《What About Today?》因為大量翻唱「披頭四」（The Beatles）及保羅賽門（Paul Simon）歌曲，專輯銷量遭受前所有未有的挫敗，從一百萬張的實力遽跌到只剩三十五萬張。

可能她大快向流行靠攏卻又選擇翻唱名曲，因此被樂評大罵媚俗，因此她痛定思痛，找來七○年代最負盛名的製作人李察培瑞（Richard Perry）為她統籌新專輯。一九七一年二月她推出《Stoney End》，終於洗刷屈辱，這張樂風帶點輕搖滾的專輯，找來眾多女性創作樂手抬轎，包括卡洛金（Carole King）、瓊妮蜜雪兒（Joni Mitchell）、蘿拉尼羅（Laura Nyro）等，既不像翻唱披頭四歌曲太過突兀，又充滿對女性運動的關懷，終於獲得廣大歌迷共鳴，該張專輯打進告示牌第十名，成為她當時賣座最佳的一張，共銷售超過一百多萬張，比《人們》（People）專輯還多。

她食髓知味，不過半年時間立刻乘勝追擊，緊接推出《Barbra Joan Streisand》專輯，同樣由李察培瑞製作，並與卡洛金、蘿拉尼羅再合作，也再度翻唱約翰藍儂（John Lennon）的《Love》、《Mother》及卡洛金同年的熱門歌曲《You’ve Got A Friend》，病狂歌迷照樣買單，大賣了一百萬張。

但真正奠定芭芭拉七○年代無敵的巨星地位，多虧了她主演並演唱的電影主題曲《往日情懷》（The Way We Were）。但一開始時，芭芭拉一度不想灌錄此首歌曲，因為她不想讓觀眾只聽到她的歌聲而忽略了她的演技，但在片子拍好後的六個月剪輯期內，愈來愈多的新聞焦點卻放在當紅炸子雞的勞勃瑞福身上，因此她反悔了，她覺得錄製一首主題曲，將會讓影迷重新注意到她。

這個決定果然是正確的，《The Way We Were》一九七三年十一月剛推出時，反應不算熱烈，一方面電台都熱中播放搖滾樂，另一方面電影也才剛上映，很快地，愈來愈多人愛上了這首歌，等到隔年二月，它終於成為芭芭拉第一首冠軍曲，而且連霸了三周，同時贏了金球獎、奧斯卡最佳歌曲獎，及葛萊美年度歌曲獎。專輯也再度稱霸告示牌冠軍，連莊兩周，銷售超過兩百二十萬張，毫無意外，成為她當時最成功的專輯。
