The 228 Massacre in Taiwan: a personal story (1)
I was 10 years old when February 28, 1947 Incident and its after-math took place in Taiwan. It is believed that the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) authorities had slaughtered up to 20000 Taiwanese, most of them considered of the elite group. Among those killed was a next-door neighbor of mine. He also happened to be the father of my closest classmate at elementary school.
Shortly after the man had disappeared from our neighborhood in early March during the peak of the KMT military suppression of what was essentially a political reform movement, my parents told me that he was taken and shot by the Chinese Nationalist authorities.
When some normalcy returned and school resumed by late March of 1947, my classmate failed to show up for school. First, I didn’t think about it as many of my other classmates also did not go to school due to widespread fear of the KMY soldiers who were stationed at nearly every corner of the streets. When I went home after school, I went next door to visit my classmate. I found my classmate and his three brothers were busy helping their mother packing to move out of our neighborhood. I was puzzled. My friend whispered to me that he, his two elder brothers and one younger brother had dropped out of school. Now that their father was never to return, the family had lost its bread-earner. The boys,
none of them older than 12, had to help with the family’s finance. I had no idea where they moved to and I was never to see my friend and his family again.
Many families in my hometown had lost a man or two during the February 28th tragedy. My joint family was fortunately enough to be spared of the tragedy. My father, who was then the head of the joint family, had prohibited his two younger brothers from getting involved in the anti-KMT movement even though my two uncles were in their early twenty and were full of anger toward the corrupt and brutal occupying Chinese authorities in Taiwan.
In the post-228 atmosphere, not unlike many other Taiwanese parents of the time, my father further discouraged his younger brothers and the rest of the family from talking about politics, particularly the 228 Massacre. I refrained from talking about politics during my growing-up years in Taiwan. Indeed, it was not until my coming the US for graduate studies in the early 1960’s that I dare to care about history and politics of Taiwan. My Taiwanese consciousness would grow, as would my anti-colonial rule view. I have come to embrace the idea that the Taiwanese must be their own masters. No more alien rule,
Chinese or other wise, in Taiwan.

故鄉
半世紀以前的有一天，學校的老師對學生說：「從今天起你們都是日本人，在北方，東海的那一邊，天皇所住的「內地」是你們效忠的國家。」
四十年前的有一天，學校的老師對學生說：「從今天起你們都是中國人，在西方，台灣海峽的那一邊，中國大陸是你們敬愛的祖國。」
二十年前的學生們，對同學說：「在東方，太平洋的那一邊，有一個龐大的陸地，我們一同移往吧，大家來做美國人，我們的美夢在美國。」
現在的大人們，對自己的美國孩子們說：「在西方，太平洋的那一邊，有一個小小的海島，山綠水清，人敦厚，那裡才是我們真正的國土，母
親的懷抱，嬰兒的搖籃。」
懷抱在那裡？搖籃在那裡？
寂寞的台灣人，流浪的台灣人，
難道你的故鄉，永遠是在海的那一邊麼？

二月廿五日，由休士頓台灣同鄉會發起的二二八紀念會，協同各台灣人宗教團體，下午四點整準時開始。同鄉會郭振源會長致詞後，接著由許隼夫牧師為二二八亡靈及所有苦難的台灣人祈福。李席舟先生、中美寺住持永全法師也接著發表紀念感言。
會中亦由施聖導牧師帶領會眾，以優美感傷的合唱來歌頌台灣。江榮憫牧師也以受難者家屬的身份，發表特別演講。台聲合唱團由卓美佐女士帶領，合唱三首台灣歌謠，配合著許利民先生優美的伴奏，許隼夫牧師在歌曲之間，朗誦情境優美的引言詩。
默禱過後，會眾大合唱「抱著咱的夢」(Formosa
Song)，在鋼琴伴奏聲下，李長裕牧師為所有會眾祝福。與會的同鄉，帶著一片祥和平靜的心，結束二二八紀念會。
同鄉會每年固定舉辦二二八紀念會，今年，本著良知、慈悲為懷的台美人，將近一百廿人與會參加。

我,沒有遭遇過 228,也沒有在教科書讀到. 到國外,我才從年長的人口中聽到這麼一件駭人的事情. 這是一見多麼慘無人道的悲劇. 在此,向受難的家屬獻上最深的敬意.

二二八事件不再是禁忌，很多人卻不想提起、不願提起，覺得這會「妨害族群和諧」。但事實真是如此嗎?套句泛藍群眾常說的：「沒有真相、沒有XX」。大家不了解真相，從各個角度來了解、分析二二八事件，如何能和解、與誰和解?
希望民進黨政府不要再鄉愿了，對於二二八事件，只有「清算」國民黨當年的暴行，對於台灣人民殘酷的鎮壓、屠殺，以及對台籍精英有計畫的消滅，讓國民黨付出應有的代價，才能告慰當年無辜死難的民眾英靈。教育部更應加長、加深對二二八事件的敘述及分析，讓我們的下一代更清楚地了解什麼是二二八事件，不要再只是幾行字帶過了…
掩蓋事實並不會讓事實消失，唯有為自己的行為真誠的道歉及負起應有的責任，才能真正的和解、和諧。
