The Instrument
The instrument played in this recording is a copy made by Thomas McCobb in Pilip Belt's workshop of a Johann Andreas Stein fortepiano that was generously loaned by Cornell University through the kindness of Malcolm Bilson. It was tonally and mechanically refined and tuned to A430 Hz in Thomas Young #2, an 18th ceuntry well temperament (that differs from the equal temperament used today) by Rob Loomis, RPT. Mozart was familiar with Stein's instruments and in 1777 wrote to his father praising them.
