問：你當時怎麼決定要拍？
柯：直覺，還有訓練過的本能。但我同時也注意將會發生的題材。哈維爾很久以前提出無權勢者的力量，現在題材是有權勢者的無力。還有就是政治與媒體，他自己是劇場人，習慣繼續執導身邊的事物，加上他遠觀政治圈，把政治當作是他本人主演的一齣荒謬劇。 賈納訪談摘錄
問：是什麼機緣讓你接觸到柯特基過世後留下的影片？
賈：他的葬禮前一天，我和妻子與這部電影的製片碰面，氣氛悲傷，但必須做個決定。我們告訴製片不要擔心，影片很有價值，優秀的剪接師有辦法處理，然後我自己也開始想，如果是由我來接續完成，我會怎麼做？
After the split of Czechoslovakia in 1992, former political dissident, leader of the Velvet Revolution, playwright and essayist Vaclav Havel became the first president of a new country, the Czech Republic. Such events are not commonplace so, he permitted his friend, filmmaker Pavel Koutecky to film him. The result is Citizen Havel, a documentary that provides an intimate look at a man of unusual experiences.

Question: How did you decide then that you should film?
P.K.: Intuition, for sure, and perhaps a developed instinct. But I also tried to keep an eye on the topic that was emerging. Havel had named a long time ago in the essay The Power of the Powerless; now it was about the “powerlessness of the powerful.” Another topic was politics and the media. And perhaps mainly Havel as a dramatist, man of the theater, a director, who with this experience continues to “direct” things around himself. And also he perceives the world of politics at a distance, as a piece of theater of the absurd in which he himself is acting.

Question: What happened to the footage after Koutecky’s death? How did it find its way to you and you to it?
Miroslav Janek: On the day before Pavel’s funeral, my wife Tonička and I met with the producer of the film, Jarmila Polakova. It was really sad, but it was also necessary to decide what to do. We told her not to worry, that the material was clearly so valuable that a skilled editor would figure out what to do with it. And back then I began to wonder what would happen if I were chosen to finish it.
