SOLO ELECTRIC BASS 1 / Squarepusher

"This album is, in many ways, like nothing Jenkinson has ever released. Beautiful, sophisticated, understated and delicate, the music flows freely, smooth and melodic, at times rushing through notes like a lively torrent, at others snaking gracefully through peaceful valleys to create an evocative patchwork tainted with subtle touches of jazz fusion. The range of emotions conveyed by the music is much vaster than on pretty much any of Jenkinson’s previous work, daringly encompassing introversion and poetry in some of the finest moments of this album."

TOTEMS FLARE / clark

"An all round killer" Time Out

"Clark seeks an immersive ideal in his music...(an) electronic fantasia and propulsion-crazy product even at its most fractured" New York Times

"His most palatable and varied record to date....Its scope produces a dizzying range of visceral and cerebral reactions." 8/10 Drowned In Sound

"Magnificent record" Dazed

"Excellent record" Metro

4 Stars - Q

Fifth album from St. Albans's Chris Clark, his follow-up to2008's aggressive and dancefloor-oriented 'Turning Dragon'.On 'Totems Flare', he combines the jacking beats prominent on that album with the smoother, more classically Warp Records sounding IDM of his earlier work, in addition to a range of psychedelic, acidic and industrial sounds and, for the first time, his own heavily processed voice. Includes the track 'Growls Garden' from the 2009 EP of that name.

AMBIVALENCE AVENUE /bibio

MYSPACE OF BIBIO

Bibio released Vignetting the Compost just five months ago, and it seemed to cement his status as a pleasant one-trick pony. So it's shocking how utterly and successfully he rewrites his playbook on this Warp debut. I actually have to eat a little crow. I wrote of Compost that Bibio had a "thin, modest voice that verges on anonymity," and suggested that he should favor atmosphere over songcraft. This seemed justified: The more the songs approximated pop structures, the less interesting they became. But on Ambivalence Avenue, Bibio proves that he actually can sing and produce memorable arrangements. He used to make FX blurs with traces of pop and folk; now he inverts that formula with bracing clarity.

The results are fantastic and diverse: The title track weaves bouncing vocals through crisp guitar licks and bouncy flutes; "All the Flowers" is a fey folk gem; the dreamy "Haikuesque (When She Laughs)" is better indie-rock than many indie-rockers are making these days. Summery anthem "Lovers' Carvings" coasts on crunchy, gleaming riffs and upbeat woodblocks, and the autumnal "The Palm of Your Wave" is simply haunting. It's hard to believe that these inspired, moving vocal performances are coming from the same guy who recorded moaning ambiguities like "Mr. & Mrs. Compost". Occasionally, you'll hear a little tremble in the strings and go, "Oh right, this is Bibio," but mostly, detuned atmosphere has been replaced by silky drive. (pitchfork 8.3/10)

WHEN MACHINES EXCEED HUMAN INTELLIGENCE / harmonic 313

Mark Pritchard's first full-length release under the Harmonic 313 moniker, ''When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence'', is a real doozy. Grumbling bassweight, glitchy traces of minimal tech, acid, dancehall and dubstep all combine to form a sound both cerebral and danceable. The elegant juxtaposition of these elements substantiate Pritchard's breadth in both influence and execution; after all, this is the man behind Link, Troubleman, NY Connection, Global Communication, Series 7 (with Stephen Horne), Vertigo (with Danny Breaks)and a dizzying array of other projects. Transmitting his equal love for Detroit techno, Jamrock dancehall and space-age hip-hop, this album should prove to be one of the standout electronic releases of 2009. The sheer bass pressure contained herein is sure to leave an indelible mark.

THOUGHT SO.. / nightmare on wax

MYSPACE

The venerable Nightmares On Wax return with ''Thought So...,'' a sun-drenched collection of dub and heavy drums arriving just in time to wrap up summer madness. After paving the way for soul-minded beat-smiths like Madlib and Flying Lotus, this latest LP is another important step in an already iconic career. Buoyant and supremely catchy, ''Thought So...'' is another skillful combo of advanced production and vintage groove. In short, the record gives fans everything they have come to expect from Nightmares On Wax.

A word from Squarepusher:

"This album started as a daydream about watching a crazy, beautiful rock band play an ultra-gig.

At first, a giant fluorescent image of a coat hanger appeared at the back of the stage. A couple of seconds later a full size replica of the Camden Falcon backroom materialised around the glowing coat hanger. Upon the stage was a group composed of five musicians. They seemed to be of differing ages, some young, some old. I noticed that the drummer was an Eskimo. They played instruments either of their own design or conventional ones that were modified such that they could be used to generate a range of sounds not typically associated with a rock band. For instance, one of the musicians appeared to be using a device attached to the body of his classical guitar that allowed him to accelerate or decelerate time in his immediate vicinity.

At a certain point he seemed to quickly reverse back to a couple of months ago. My suspicions were corroborated by his hair and beard temporarily looking rather shorter. Sonically, this had the effect of extruding certain melodic phrases into shimmering monoliths and slow emotion wave fronts. Other sounds being generated near to him on stage also got partially sucked into the time sponge and were returned at high speed as imploded sonic pin cushions.

The coat hanger started glowing emerald green..."

O SOUNDTRACK MY HEART / pivot

From Aphex Twin to Battles, Warp Records' early seismic influence on dance and pop cannot be underestimated, so it's heartening to hear that their new signing Pivot are continuing their boundary-pushing spirit.

The three-piece have created an album of sonic delights that draws influences from a gamut of genres, but with the focus on relentless grooves, from the menacing In the Blood to the epic title track, which begins like Close Encounters of the Third Kind only to take in post-rock and glam. With less focus on the ambient and more on deft nuances, this is a wild and captivating listen.

RED ,YELLOW & BLUE / born ruffians

Produced by Rusty Santos, the New York mixer behind Animal Collective and Panda Bear's albums, Red, Yellow & Blue exemplifies the Ruffians' brand of self-described 'hootin and hollarin'. From start to finish it's a good time, and the band knows it. With songs like the jangly ''Hedonistic Me'' and the sugary sweet ''Foxes Mate for Life'' to the foot stomping ''Badonkadonkey'', the band constantly pushes the boundaries of musical arrangements.

TURNING DRAGON / clark

試聽: Clark’s myspace

“Alongside Body Riddle I’d written a lot of full energy dance floor tracks and Turning Dragon just came from honing and building on these. It all happened pretty instinctively I hardly gave it any concious thought, other that keep wired working hours and the good stuff will come through´… Within 4 weeks I had tons of dance floor tracks… seems a bit weird to not put them out so ... Here they are” - Chris Clark.

Clark drops his excellent new album. Don't expect the lullabies and emotional epics of the last album 'Body Riddle', 'Turning Dragon' is a smasher. Hard, deep, continuously evolving and gritty tracks, aimed at contorting your body on the dance floor or just contorting your brain. This is an album that you could almost call techno, but techno with the a.d.d. detail pushed as far as it can go.

QUARISTICE / autechre

試聽: Autechre's Myspace

Autechre’s first album in nearly three years.
“Quaristice” is an album that actually seems to register more or less on first listen, it seems to speak a language you can follow, even if you're not quite as fluent with it as you'd like to be.

And the effect seems to be deliberate - the album kicks off with "Altibzz", a lovely melodic soundscape that's so light and warm it could almost have been lifted straight off Incanabula or Amber, while the 20 track sequence seems to follow a kind of short-but-sweet agenda that must have had the more impatient listener in mind.

The writing process has apparently also changed, brought on by the physical necessities of a more portable recording environment and a method of track construction that has more in common with Autechre's live setup than with their more traditional studio configuration.(boomkat.com)
