About the Artist:
aus is the solo project of Tokyo-based Yasuhiko Fukuzono, who has been composing music for experimental film works since he was a teenager. His 2006 release "Sonorapid” is a modern bedroom pop album that gorgeously exhibits the synchronization of beautiful electronic sounds with dazzling vocals, intertwined by subtle beats programming. aus performed in Sonarsound Tokyo 2006, which is the satellite event of the world’s largest cutting-edge electronic music event in Spain. So far, he has crafted some of his most beautiful compositions for the 6 short films and movies shot by Takafumi Tsuchiya.

小瀬村晶(Akira Kosemura)是近年來在日本炙手可熱的聆聽系電音廠牌Schole創辦人,自2006年成立以來,不但出版專輯,發行免費雜誌,介紹訪問氣質相近的音樂人與藝術家,還有特色地方遊記與音樂活動記事等。其中《Tiny Musical》可說是他個人代表作,以鋼琴、木吉他、口風琴等原音樂器演奏與電子聲響,簡約細緻地疊合行進,音樂的靈動讓人彷彿聽見山河、森林與湖泊的景色,旋律間時而飛躍時而低迴,音樂中透露出的淡淡的哀愁,大概反映著小瀬對當前大自然破壞的不捨吧。另一方面,他與澳洲聲音藝術家Lawrence English的友誼讓他有機會在English旗下的音樂廠牌Someone Good發片,繼之前獲廣泛好評的《It’s on Everything》,最近剛收到他們最新的合作結晶《寶麗萊鋼琴》(Polaroid Piano)。
當Edwin Land發明Polaroid (寶麗萊),讓世人對如何運用攝影紀錄世界產生革命性影響,除了時間,還有其獨特的朦朧畫質,似乎暗示如夢幻般的回憶更勝逼真的追求。這樣子的攝影觀念對小瀨的音樂創作也產生深遠影響,並延伸至這張《寶麗萊鋼琴》中,運用他充滿個人風格的鋼琴演奏與電子聲響處理,加上能激發強烈意象的一些田野錄音(English特別為專輯提供一些他在澳洲布利斯班與霍巴特所作的田野錄音,還有他創作的短少卻豐富音樂段落),通過聲音將感性一刻轉化成創造性場域,在虛實間營造充滿想像空間的音樂氛圍,有樂評曾這樣子形容小瀬的音樂:「音色中見景色、旋律間有故事」,這可說是對他音樂的最好註腳。

在2008年底,個人第二張專輯《Nocturnal》將於日本當紅獨立電子廠牌Schole發行之際,馬來西亞獨立電音創作人flica (a.k.a. Euseng Seto)已開始準備第三張作品《Telepathy Dreams》。歷經八個月,從創作、製作混音乃至發行都一手包辦,這顯然是Flica頗為重視的一次嘗試,也確實是其音樂性更加嚴肅成熟的表現。招牌的鋼琴、吉他等樂器主軸與微模結構的電音節奏搭配依舊漂亮流暢,卻成為較為陰暗情緒的載具。然而,正如同黑白照片可以冷調,也可以溫暖,flica的明亮音色中飄浮著憂鬱,沉靜的氛圍蘊含著激情,觸動了夢的意識,在靈魂的層次有了連結。
關於flica:
flica是來自馬來西亞吉隆坡的電子原音創作人/平面設計師euseng seto的代號,自2005年起即開始其音樂創作活動,與朋友合組電音二人組合muxu,2007初開始以flica名義實踐探索個人較實驗的電子音樂風格,及後與當地獨立廠牌mu-nest合作出版首張個人專輯《windvane & window》,悠然舒泰的有機風格讓他打開在日本的知名度,引起日本電子音樂圈的注目,2008年12月更在日本著名環境電音廠牌schole出版專輯《nocturnal》,受歡迎程度更上一層樓。

波蘭年輕聲音藝術家Tomasz Bednarcyzk的第二張個人專輯。擅長以minimalism創造私密的聲響世界的他,深思謹慎近乎無為,讓所有元素朦朧定靜地展開,而模糊了時間感。
Akin to his acclaimed debut edition 'Summer Feelings' (Room40), which elegantly documented a uniquely Polish experience of summer replete with distantly warm bursts of piano, and crisp glitch ridden pulses, Painting Sky Together is an considered exploration in minimalism. Bednarczyk relishes the intimacy of his sound world, taking the most restrained compositional actions and allowing them to unfold with a hazy stillness that blurs time. It’s an album that’s both crisp and fragile, but ultimately its textures are overwhelmingly warm and generous. A statement of hushed awe – listen with care.

Tomasz Bednarczyk (b. 1986) is a young sound artist living in Wroclaw, Poland. Since 2004 he has composing music presenting new, pop qualities through his fragile sounds. He makes melancholic impressions based on acoustic loops and surrounding ambience.

let the night roar/ king cannibal

A fearful, uncomfortable but admiring and heartfelt round of applause, please, for Ninja Tune's first (only?) hard man - King Cannibal aka Zilla aka Dylan Richards. Coming through with a razor-edged, utterly uncompromising industrial mash-up of sounds and rhythms from dancehall and drum & bass, Radio 1's Mary-Anne Hobbs has already declared his music to be "too dark!" And that was before she had heard "Let The Night Roar," a record so obsessed with violence in its many manifestations that he named it after a quote from nutter-cultist Jim Jones (that's the man behind the Jonestown Massacre).
Up until a couple of years ago, Zilla was best known for a series of remarkable mix tapes, including "A Friendly Game of Chess" (w/ Buddy Peace), "One Foot In The Fire, One Fist In The Air" and compiling Watch And Repeat Play for Warp Records (again with Buddy Peace). But King Cannibal was born when Richards began experimenting with using the sonic palette of drum & bass over dancehall rhythms. The track he made was "Aragami Style". Not for nothing has Amon Tobin described it as "A great tune...put together like a DJ's wet dream."
Richards used this as the leap-off point for the album which would become "Let The Night Roar". As he puts it, "This album is really about me laying out the core elements to the 'brual deluxe' sound of King Cannibal. For this project it was all about establishing what makes a King Cannibal track and working to get those ingredients right and how they translate through genre and mood switches."
Tension and release, exhilaration and fear, sex and violence, all the elements of great music are here. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

SOUL JAZZ-STEPPAS' DELIGHT /v.a.

If you're going to trust any label to give you th low down on a UK soundystem scene it's probably going to be Soul Jazz innit? Here the good people from the most knowledgable institution in the country compile a forward looking retrospective that fills the gaps between Martin 'Blackdown' Clark's 'Roots of dubstep' comp and their current charge with the Box of Dub series. Complete with the now standard booklet giving an informative and eye opening account for each artist included, this is an indispensible guide for those who've had their interest piqued by the recent storm of press coverage and internet exposure that has pushed the scene into the glaring limelight. The selections here are pretty much impeccable, running from stone cold standards like Kode 9's '9 Samurai', to unreleased gems from Plastician, Joker, and Gatekeeper, and a wealth of recent classics from Shackleton, Martyn, Peverelist, Ikonika and TRG that would cost you 5 times the price of admission alone to pick up individually. With the explosion in club nights and the brace of new producers and sounds to the scene you really can't be avoiding this stuff any more, so get with the programme and turn yer subs up. Massive.

英國曼徹斯特大學的同學James Ford與Jas Shaw,一個主修生物學,一個主修哲學,這兩個同學沒事就愛在學校宿舍搞一些怪里怪氣的電音派對,兩人跟深受民謠音樂啟發的創作型歌手Simon Lord與彈貝斯的Alex MacNaughten在2000年的時候,跟隨著當時由Broadcast、The Beta Band等樂團所帶起的一種結合傳統搖滾歌曲創作與電音節奏的潮流風格,組了一個名叫Simian的電子搖滾樂團,由於James與Jas不喜歡他們好像是在一支搖滾樂團中負責節奏操盤的感覺,Simian在2005年宣告拆夥,兩人另組了Simian Mobile Disco(以下簡稱S.M.D.)樂團,隨後在2007年以榮獲Q、All Music Guide等傳媒4星好評的電音大碟『Attack Decay Sustain Release』揚眉吐氣,兩人在首張專輯打響名號後,瞬間成了Bjork、Muse、Arctic Monkeys、Peaches、Klaxons、Little Boots等藝人/樂團爭相邀請擔任單曲混音或專輯製作的大忙人,2009年夏季,S.M.D.樂團將以專輯【Temporary Pleasure】掀起另一波的電音熱浪。
在【Temporary Pleasure】專輯中,S.M.D.邀請了許多當紅樂團的團員一起參與電音搖滾大冒險,像是以「中東迷幻音樂與福音音樂強碰之後的音樂風格」自居的紐約團Yeasayer主唱Chris Keating,應邀為techno pop作品"Audacity Of Huge"獻聲助威;前威爾斯搖滾名團Super Furry Animals靈魂人物Gruff Rhys為節奏鮮跳的電子流行樂作品"Cream Dream"灌注了深具對比色彩的冷色調歌聲;來自美國華盛頓州的龐克/舞曲組合The Gossip的風雲女聲Beth Ditto,為電子藍調曲風的"Cruel Intensions"帶來了酷酷的聽覺。助陣歌手還包括了英國電子團Hot Chip主唱Alexis Taylor,布魯克林的實驗電子樂雙人女生團Telepathe,曾經與Feist合作過,來自柏林的都會靈魂歌手Jamie Lidell。

曾於涼音堂發行作品的日本音樂人Fjordne,在新加坡Kitchen推出的第四張個人專輯,名稱與靈感源自日本作家太宰治1947年小說《斜陽》,以獨到旋律與不和諧聲音的運用,透過多種樂器的原音重奏再現文字的內省與田園抒情。包裝為Kitchen特製的6頁對摺手風琴式相片封套。
"THE SETTING SUN" is FJORDNE's 4th album since the succession of 3 albums released in 2008 by Ryoondo Tea (Japan), Dynamophone Records (US) and U-Cover (Belgium). Based in Tokyo, FJORDNE is also known as Shunichiro Fujimoto. In the winter of early 2009, FJORDNE worked on "THE SETTING SUN," inspired by the classic Japanese literature Shayo (1947) by Osamu Dazai, recreating through sound the introspection and pastoral lyricism of Dazai’s language. "THE SETTING SUN" underlines his mastery of melody and dissonance through an ensemble of acoustic instruments such as piano, guitars and strings embodied in layers of dense sonic textures and disorder, transforming his sounds into a new time span.
Packaged in Kitchen's customized 6 fold accordion photo album, the essence of "THE SETTING SUN" is made visible by artwork provided by April Lee (one half of aspidistrafly and artist for Kitchen). Employing the progression and pause of time, the flow of the images gently echo FJORDNE's interpretation to reveal this carefully hidden world.

MACHINE DREAMS / little dragon

LITTLE DRAGON Machine Dreams (2009 UK 11-track CD album - A bold and surprising side/two step onwards from their self titled debut, 'Machine Dreams', with its nagging hooks and gloriously infectious tunes, sees Little Dragon return with a pulsating electro pop epic that Prince would be proud of [only fronted by a beautiful Swedish lady with a sultry voice]. Recorded in their home city of Gothenburg, 'Machine Dreams' is a gigantic leap on from previous material but still maintains a distinct sound that can only be Little Dragon. Album opener 'A New' breaks us in gently with a single whirring note on the synthesiser, an almost alien sound that gradually morphs into a slow, thumping bassline. Whilst the single, 'Feather', finds Yukimi's voice at its most detached and blaze, seemingly nonchalant yet magnificently seductive. With additional highlights such as 'Runabout', 'Swimming' and 'Blinking Pigs', the album closes with the stunning 'Fortune', which, with its smattering of drums and bass and the magic of Yukimi's voice and Hakan's electronic dynamics floating on top, is the perfect track to end this fascinating journey through Little Dragon's brave new world!).
