FOR EMMA, FOREVER AGO / bon iver

Bon Iver是 Justin Vernon 的音樂化名(意指美好冬季),這位來自美國威斯康辛州的獨立音樂界新星,沒有清秀雅痞的外表,相反一副藍領工人般的粗獷外表下,卻隱藏一顆溫柔細緻的心靈,他本來是樂團DeYarmond Edison的成員,後來因理念不合而離開,加上肝臟出了問題,於是決定回老家威斯康辛州北部的森林小屋,過著遺世獨立的單純生活,這段時間也讓他有機會脫離都市的紛擾,重新細味大自然的美好,並逐漸轉化成一首一首動人樂章,後來因獲得朋友的鼓勵,決定把這些歌曲發表,靠著老舊的錄音設備錄製成首張個人專輯《For Emma, Forever Ago》,後來又因緣際會交由獨立廠牌Jagjaguwar正式出版,並且為原來略顯簡陋的部分錄音加以改善,卻沒想到專輯一推出即獲得歐美樂評樂迷的壓倒性好評,英國MOJO 與Uncut雜誌分別給與5/5滿分與“每月專輯”,許多音樂雜誌、網站皆把它選為2008年度代表專輯,Vernon 大概萬萬沒想到自己這麼快竟然就變成了紅遍全球的大忙人吧。
不過《For Emma, Forever Ago》自有它獨特的音樂魅力,那民謠底純樸含蓄的張力、沒有太多的商業包裝與考量,與自然環境呼應的寂靜美感,無不讓人聽後心曠神怡,頗有洗滌人心之效。當然,Bon Iver就跟每位偉大的民謠歌手一樣,自有他獨樹一幟的歌聲,時而低迴吟唱、時而高音狂飆,加上美妙的和聲編排,卻不失誠懇的情感表達,這張聽似簡單的《For Emma, Forever Ago》能夠感動各地一眾樂迷的心,想一想,背後的意義其實一點也不簡單呢。

破曉之時緩緩醒來,Mondialito的甜蜜與憂傷,讓我們聽見微風與雨聲,那是時光縫隙的空間感,忘我的透明感,美麗哀愁在其中緩緩滋生擴展。特別收錄與Club 8合作曲"Last Sleep Of A Boy"
來自東京的Mondialito,由女生Junko 填詞演唱,男生笛岡俊哉Toshiya作曲並彈奏所有樂器,曾到香港與南韓演出,備受好評。Mondialito以日系呼氣式女聲營造出略帶憂傷的甜蜜夢幻,專輯主要以法語演唱,有著類似陳綺貞的溫暖歌聲與呢喃細語,由原音吉他、電子節奏、鋼琴、大提琴編織出早晨雨後氣息與閃亮光澤,首張專輯「Note Of Dawn」裡,收錄了Mondialito與 Club 8的Johan合作的"Last Sleep Of A Boy"。還有The Cardigans與Franz Ferdinand的瑞典製作人Tore Johansson精心打造的"Rainy Green Grass"。的確,北歐大概是Mondialito另一個心靈故鄉。而翻唱奧黛莉赫本電影「第凡內早餐」經典名曲"Moon River",呼應著專輯名稱「清晨筆記」,更是美麗的結束。Junko目前正在法國留學,Toshiya則沈浸於電影及音樂,兩人對當代藝術與文學極度熟稔,我們一邊聽著Mondialito的音樂,一邊讀著吉本芭娜娜的小說,「閉上雙眼,側耳傾聽,有如置身在綠色的海底,看見世界在亮晃晃的綠色中發光,水流舒緩而透明,再痛苦的事情,也都像魚群輕掠過肌膚...」,你我聽見了一種細緻而淡雅,哀愁的預感。(文/galeer)

Rocking Horse is Kelli’s third solo album. Produced by Max Richter, this album contains 13 original songs and was completed in Summer 2008.
The Rocking Horse album signals a new musical direction for Kelli. Inspired by the vast wildernesses of Mexico and California, Kelli wrote the songs for this beautifully crafted album whilst traveling with her acoustic guitar El Nino.
Rocking Horseis a stark abandonment of an electronic past, but this is how itpenetrates: Abandoning style for substance, crafting hauntingly ethereal mood pieces adorned by Richter’s richly melodic, textured production skills. This music is timeless, but only is such that time is irrelevant. Medieval and baroque sensibilities playfully combine with dark nu-folk to conjure a haunting tapestry of powerful, modern madrigals.
Utilizing Richter’s classical background, Rocking Horseshimmers with string quartet and flute arrangements, cor anglais and vintage organs, alongside the masterful acoustic guitar playing of Marc Pilley, Richter’s own piano work and Kelli’s endearing vocals.
Rocking Horse is influenced by Kelli’s nomadic past, wherein she travelled across California and Mexico after the release of her last solo album, Psychic Cat in 2004. ‘Urique’ was written in a sacred canyon in Mexico after hitching a ride with a meth-addicted truck driver, whilst the title track emerged after a journey through the California wilderness.

Cute, curly-headed diva Beth Rowley won many hearts with her charming Violets EP. Born in Peru and raised in the English West Country, Rowley has been mentored by Carleen Anderson and now follows up on the success of that EP with Little Dreamer, an album that continues her sweetly old fashioned, Motown-esque blend of blues, gospel, soul and jazz--all peppered with a classic mainstream sheen. Produced by Steve Power (Blur) and Kevin Bacon & Jonathan Quarmby (Richard Hawley, Finlay Quaye), the album discloses a voice as jaw-droppingly flawless and hopelessly compelling as a Norah Jones or Amy Winehouse, but with atmospheric traces of Karen Carpenter, Aretha Franklin and Eva Cassidy too. Tracks like the stunning gospel blues of "Almost Persuaded" and soulful single "Oh My Life" are good examples of what to expect from this cozy, feelgood album. The reggae pulse of "I Shall Be Released" tends to undermine the power and beauty of the original, but slow, heartfelt blues numbers like "One Cloud" more than make up for these blips. Rowley plays it safe on Little Dreamer, but it's a stunning collection nonetheless.-Danny McKenna

CONOR OBERST / conor oberst

Abandoning the Bright Eyes moniker he's been performing under since his teens, Conor Oberst reverted to his birth name for his 2008 follow-up to 2007's Cassadaga. As he not only released the record under his own name but titled it Conor Oberst, it's hard not to think of the album as a new beginning or statement of purpose, as that's generally the case when a singer/songwriter splits from his main band, but this is such a low-key record it can't support such grand theories. But that subdued attitude is in fact a major difference between this and Bright Eyes albums, where every action tended to be over-amplified, a practice Oberst generally avoids here. Part of it is down to mere circumstance.
Struck with one of his bursts of wanderlust, Oberst headed down to Mexico to cut the album, gathering together a collection of friends who he dubbed the Mystic Valley Band, a name bearing an uncanny resemblance to such '70s country-rock outfits as Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band. Naturally, this is a conscious move, as much of this tight 12-track album resides firmly within the confines of classic country-rock, whether it's a mellow ramble like "Danny Callahan" or the dust-kicking "I Don't Want to Die (In the Hospital)." These benefit greatly by the loose-limbed Mystic Valley Band, who infuse a great deal of warmth to this music, but their open-heartedness is a reflection of Oberst's subtle shift to relying on modest gestures instead of grand ones. Although he still has a tendency to shoehorn five-dollar words into every other phrase — particularly when it comes time to write ballads — he's not trying quite so hard here, letting his lyrics be almost as relaxed as his music. But the fact that the music does feel relaxed, even when it bears his classicist affectations, does make Conor Oberst markedly different than the music of Bright Eyes, and makes it a worthwhile project — even if it proves to be a detour instead of a new beginning.
