Aimee's seventh solo album is a return to form after the artistic detours of 2005's concept album The Forgotten Arm and 2006's Christmas CD One More Drifter in the Snow. Featuring thirteen new original songs, producer Paul Bryan describes the record as "deceptively powerful...very rich and grand-sounding." The songs range from the stripped-down-to-basics of "Columbus Avenue," to the almost Cars-esque synth-pop of "Freeway," alongside the classic Jimmy Webb/Glen Campbell-era "Phoenix,". The final song "Ballantines" is a duet with Sean Hayes complete with barroom piano and trombone section. All songs were penned by Mann with the exception of "True Believer" which was co-written with fellow singer-songwriter Grant Lee Phillips.

SUNDAY AT DEVIL DIRT / isobel campbell & mark lanegan

Teaming up for the second time, Isobel Campbell (formerly of Belle & Sebastian) and Mark Lanegan (formerly of The Screaming Trees and myriad legendary grunge off-shoots) forge an unlikely but perfectly balanced mutual reliance. Campbell's soft, almost jazzy voice is the worthy foil of Lanegan's booming baritone, the two of them equal parts soothing and menace. This follow-up can be brandished as proof that opposites don't only attract, but can grow together even as they grow apart.
See, on Sunday at Devil Dirt Lanegan's weighty presence expands to a point where it obscures the moon--especially on "The Raven" and "Back Burner" where his Johnny Cash/Tom Waits croak reaches optimum levels of exaggeration--as Campbell flits further into the background, weaving between Morricone-esque, spaghetti western strings and sewing a beautiful ethereal quality into the seams. And such vocal juxtapositions make for intoxicating harmonies and stark, memorable impressions. But there is still also a real gentle magic to be found when they operate on an equal footing, as on "Trouble" or the sultry "Come on Over (Turn Me On)", the latter begging to be a James Bond theme. –(James Berry, amazon.com)

METODE DE ROCANROL / pascal comelade

對法國另類流行音樂有點涉獵的朋友,Pascal Comelade的名字一定不會感到陌生,他那聽起來好像簡單,帶點灰帶點怪又帶點童真的感性音符,配合不同原音樂器的巧妙編排,尤其是玩具鋼琴的運用特別令人印象深刻。拉丁音樂-特別是探戈與加泰隆尼亞的音樂是他的根源,但他就是有辦法轉化成自己的風格,還引來不少後來者模仿(日本就有一隊向他致敬的樂團叫Pascal)。最近剛收到他的新專輯「Metode de Rocanrol」,不追求什麼新的突破,一切還是那樣自成一派、悠然自得。
歷經2006年和2007年的兩個冬天才完成新專輯,期間Pascal把自己關在房裡創作演奏錄音,只允許專輯助陣樂手,即鼓手Didier Banon、伸縮號手Enzo Tozoni以及長期合作夥伴銅管大師Pep Pascual三人進入;Pascal則照例包辦吉他、斑鳩琴、黑管、手風琴、玩具鋼琴、迷你電風琴等大部分器樂演奏,序曲〝Stranger in Paradigm〞結合搖滾與藍調略帶傷感,緊接著的〝L’U"〞則是強烈紐奧良草根味的銅管曲,〝Jopo de Pojo Not Dead〞帶有Kurt Weill風格彷彿旋轉木馬的倫巴曲,〝The Hallucinogenic Espontex Sinfonia〞充滿了濃濃波麗路加泰隆尼亞風格,〝Smog on the Vermut〞一曲充滿著探戈的愛恨情仇,不過最有趣的要算是〝Elvis Loved Dogs〞,以Kinks樂團名曲〝You Really Got Me〞為引子然後帶出之後的主題音樂來描寫畫家Kata Billups的名作〝Elvis Loved Dogs〞,最後在彷彿法國印象派大師薩堤風格的寧靜悠揚鋼琴曲,為整張專輯劃下一個完美的休止符!值得一提的是,封面那幅「裸身米妮」,是觀念攝影大師Les Krims的著名作品,跟Pascal的灰色幽默音樂氣質可謂絕配。

A fourteen-song set documenting The Decemberists' lead singer/songwriter's 2006 solo tour. Meloy was heralded by Rolling Stone as "a master of improbable juxtaposition: arcane, detailed fictions of star-crossed passion and avenging bloodshed dressed up in indie rock jangle, la-de-da choruses, and vintage prog-rock bombast" in a review of The Decemberists' show in NY's Central Park last spring. By contrast, the live solo album presents him in a stripped down, acoustic setting. Of the thirteen Meloy originals, two are previously unreleased compositions, "Dracula's Daughter" and "Wonder". Along the way, he employs snippets of songs from The Smiths, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, and REM. The collection also captures ample between-song banter.

Phoebe Killdeer was once a member of Nouvelle Vague. She’s belting out bluesy gothic numbers like the Duke Spirit, with hints of early Nick Cave or PJ Harvey about her. It's a stompy American rock thing going on, with a passion that recalls the Noisettes. A track is called 'I Like You Very Much' - it's hard to disagree. And her backing band ain't half bad either - being able to pull off the white-boy afro and shiny silver trainers combo is a sign of excellence from their guitarist. They would be perfect for a Tarantino soundtrack, their retro sleaze sound off-set with the ability to craft poppy little gems with hints of surf punk.

2001年起,發行三張個人專輯和四張電影原聲帶(三部衝浪+一部動畫),唱片公司大老闆摸不著頭緒,這個衝浪選手怎會一次比一次暢銷,簽約金立刻加兩倍,然後傑克強森也立刻退回:「用錢買人買歌的想法,令我不安。」還好大老闆有慧根,改成一張空白合約:「尊重你的一切決定。」這才喚回傑克強森,讓他能安心創作。 安心創作,說來可不簡單。
首先,他成立自己的音樂廠牌Brushfire Records,廣邀同好Matt Costa、ALO等創作歌手加入,不讓環球高層干預任何音樂製作;然後,他在夏威夷的自宅蓋起名為「芒果樹」錄音室,屋頂舖滿太陽能版(專輯內附小冊有圖為證),以太陽能發電錄製專輯,不用耗電的電腦錄音軟體, 不斷彩排演唱新歌,然後一氣呵成將歌曲錄製在盤帶上,另外,再詳加確定全世界都採用百分百再生紙印製專輯。取之於大自然,用之於好音樂,一個人的堅持,讓全世界找回音樂最初的感動與美好。傑克強森第四張個人專輯"Sleep Through The Static",讓人佩服的五體投地。

I CAN HEAR YOUR HEART / aidan john moffat

Having previously made a name for himself as the seedier half of Scottish indie legends Arab Strap, Aidan John Moffat here finds himself in distinctly more lewd territory than thealready unabashed work of his previous band. 'I Can Hear Your Heart' is a collection of poems and short stories read over a variety of music and atmospheric sounds, at turns humorous, heartbreaking and always explicit. A light narrative runs throughout, with an enclosed short story in the sleeve (charmingly entitled 'Poop') setting the scene. In amongst thespoken words, Moffat even finds time to include an accordion-led cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'Hungry Heart'.

New studio album from Alessandra Celletti, the Italian composer/pianist whose previous CDs include acclaimed interpretations of works by Glass, Satie and Gurdjieff.
Way Out is Alessandra's third album of original material, following Overground (1997) and Chi Mi Darà Le Ali (2006). Recorded in Rome in 2007, Way Out marks an inovative exploration of several musical styles, including vocal tracks sung by Alessandra as well as a number of her exquisite solo piano compositions. She is joined on most of the tracks by drummer Fabio Ferri, while Renzo Pin provided English-language lyrics.
Stand-out tracks include Dear To Me, Burning and Hundred Points, the latter a future pop classic complemented by a brilliant animated video clip made by Tony Sbarbaro. A unique set that defies classification, the album also features one bonus song, the beautiful title track from Alessandra's previous artist album, Chi Mi Darà Le Ali. The memorable cover image is the painting Pensando alla Guerra by artist Isobel Blank.
