CONTROVERSY: A TRIBUTE TO PRINCE / va




While Prince and Michael Jackson’s battle for pop supremacy may have once been the subject of debate, anyone (as comedian Chris Rock points out) can tell you these days that Prince has emerged as the clear victor. Easily one of the most influential musicians today, his sex obsessed yet spiritually minded soul can be heard everywhere from pop chart dominators like Outkast and Justin Timberlake to on the edge experimentalists like Jamie Lidell and LCD soundsystem. Prince’s music has spanned numerous styles and genre barriers. Rock, soul, jazz, and hip-hop are all a part of his repertoire, though he is equally comfortable eschewing classification and treading completely new sonic territory.

In the spirit of Prince, forward thinking experimentalism, ontroversy compiles a selection of classic cover versions of his biggest hits provided by a divergent array of talented musicians. "Purple Rain," "Controversy," "When Doves Cry," and "Crazy You" are all present, though their reinterpretations take the compositions into new territory. Contributing artists include soul legend ‘angelo, reggae latest sensations The Dynamics, rock group Simian (genesis of electro-house mainstays Simian Mobile Disco) and dubstep wonder-boy Kode 9.
