本書出版後，瞬即售罄，重印又重印，至當年十二月又出版了增訂版，銷售總數超逾五萬本。由於本書早已銷售一空，因此多年來書店內均無本書踪影。


為了讓年輕一代認識此事、為了讓這項記載繼續留存，《人民不會忘記》編輯委員會決定藉二十周年的機會，再版此書，俾得廣為流傳。


銷售收入會一如既往，撥入香港記者協會下屬的「人民不會忘記基金」，用作促進及推動中國和香港新聞自由及出版自由之用。
