This cartoon of " 老 夫 子 " was a plagiarism by my son. I had been away for a while and when I came back, he gave it to me as a greeting card. It was irreverent, but very funny. Thank god he, like me, has a sense of humour. Humour is one of the most important things in life. Looking at it, I am very happy to say that in the last few months, I have commissioned the creator of " 老 夫 子 ", Mr 王 澤 , to produce and reproduce a number of cartoons for us at the China Club. There will be 21 of them, and they will redecorate the walls of the private lift of the Club at the old Bank of China Building. They will, I hope, make people laugh whilst they are inside the lift. It will be even more splendid if some would burst out laughing loud. I have done so on many occasions for stupid reasons. It will lighten up that brief period when we ascend. And much more educated than, say, watching a television monitor which is what one invariably finds nowadays in a fancy block.

I have been reading 老 夫 子 ever since I was a child. It has been over 35 years. I used to buy the comic whenever I could. I still buy it when I see it. Mr 王 澤 is, for me, a bit of a genius - or I should say, he and his father, who originally invented the character. It is wonderful that father and son should use the same pseudonym for a publication that has lasted for so long. I hope the present 王 澤 will have a son to carry on for the third generation. All of us should support this perpetuation. If anyone talks of Hong Kong heritage, surely 老 夫 子 is a prime candidate. Even more so with its continuation for generations. Not only has it survived for so many years, but it has given enormous pleasure to a countless number of people. Of comics, 老 夫 子 ranks supreme. It is clean, and when swearing is occasionally alluded to, funny symbols would be used: ☆ ! ? - and we know exactly how they sound and what they mean. And it is so healthy for us all to laugh.

I wish more people, especially the younger generation, will not forget about artists like 王 澤 . They are easily passed over because they form part of our daily lives and become almost unnoticeable. So if we should claim to have a renaissance sense of heritage, we should begin to seek out characters such as 王 澤 who have made a real difference to the vernacular in Hong Kong.

Talking of the vernacular, the King of Kowloon ( 九 龍皇 帝 ) has just passed away. There is the usual pathetically ginger debate about whether this graffiti should be preserved. Of course they should. If not preserved, they should not be rubbed off, as it has happened in a number of cases. Have people not heard of Basquiat? He was a graffiti artist, and his works were outstanding. Our own Joe Lau ( 劉 鑾 雄 ) has in his possession a couple of the best Basquiats there are. He paid tens of millions for them, and we know Mr Lau is an exceedingly clever man! So let's be decisive and keep everything. In time, none of us will have to decide if the works of the "King of Kowloon"are good or bad, outstanding or appalling. The populace and the open art market will be the judge of that. If people recognize his genius, they will peddle his works. If they don't and eventually come to regard him as an irrelevant and a third-rate artist, nobody would care. One thing about the populace is that they are never cheated on genius. When there is genius, it's recognized, if not immediately, then eventually.

So may I say: long live 老 夫 子 , 大 蕃 薯 , 秦 先 生 , 陳 小 姐 , and all of their humour and sense of the absurdity, and all of their wit and charm; and in the same vein, may the graffiti of the "King of Kowloon" live on much, much longer than the Queen's Pier!
