病中的掙扎、內心的昏亂、環境的惡劣,並沒有讓他放棄繪畫。 灰暗消沈並不是他的主要色調,追隨太陽的向日葵(Still Life :Vase With Fifteen Sunflowers)、優美展容的粉紅玫瑰(Still Life: Pink Roses in a Vase)述說一種平靜安穩的生命。 他知道有個深沉平穩的極美之處,他可以享受,而且拿捏得準。比起做一位不能施展抱負的牧師,他更適合做個深刻的畫家。
海倫凱勒曾說:「把臉迎向陽光,你便看不到陰影。」 現實生活儘管陰沈,蝕人志氣,然而他選擇了仰首太陽。 他宣稱「基督是最偉大的藝術家!」 所以他將神所創造的自然之美,用心觀察,將之一一呈現在畫紙上,於是詩人花園(Tree in the Garden, The Poet’s Garden)、禾草堆(Haystacks in Provence)、星月夜(Starry Night)、紅葡萄園(The Red Vineyard)、麥田昏鴉(Wheat-field with Crows)、粉杏花(Almond Tree in Blossom)….在在是他筆下動人的場景。
以畫筆喚醒人心
當別人忙著為公卿顯要畫像時,他偏愛畫普羅大眾、市井小民:圍坐喝茶吃馬鈴薯的人(The Potato Eaters)、織布工人(Weaver)、牧羊人(The Shepherd)、郵差(Portrait of the Postman Joseph Roulin)、播種的農夫(The Sower)、上工的小農夫婦(Peasant Couple Going to Work)、悲傷的老人(The Old Sad Man)……
一幅《好撒馬利亞人》(The Good Samaritan)則是畫出的聖經故事。遠處兩個漸行漸遠、漠不關心的人影,對比出眼前滿臉鬚髯的大漢,正奮力用前胸頂起無助負傷的人,將之駝上高高的馬背上。 梵谷是那命定好的撒馬利亞人,畫筆則是他的力道,高高地把這幫升斗小民舉起。像耶穌一向的選擇,他也選擇這些窮人與弱勢者,是十分後現代的。他以畫筆喚醒人們對神話語的注意──愛你的鄰舍。
