電影「真善美（The Sound of Music）」改編自故事女主角瑪利亞1949年的真人真事傳記「The Story of The Trapp Family Singers」。該書名在台灣譯為「真善美的故事」（原用"達菩之家"為譯名，後因電影「真善美」大受歡迎，乃於第二版時改名為「真善美的故事」），由丁貞婉女士譯，先知出版社出版（62年7月三版），譯筆非常流暢。

「The Story of The Trapp Family Singers」記載從瑪利亞離開本篤會修院，到達菩上校家擔任家庭老師，一直到全家逃離奧地利至美國開始新生活，並如何在困苦中，使The Trapp Family Singers（達菩之家合唱團）在美成名經過。瑪利亞以輕鬆筆法寫出其中的悲與歡，讀起來令人感動。特別是她樂觀信心的態度，說明了信仰對她的影響。

可惜的是電影「真善美」僅描寫書的前半部，後半部有血有淚部份更值得一讀。

1957年瑪利亞、她的3個孩子與Wasner神父在結束The Trapp Family Singers長達20年演唱後，到南太平洋傳福音。最後他們回到維蒙特州，經營達菩家庭莊園。

1956年德國拍攝的電影「達菩之家」首映，造成轟動。接下來又續拍「達菩之家在美國」。

「真善美」於1959年搬上美國紐約百老匯，首演1443場次，大為成功，獲頒1960年東尼獎最佳音樂劇及最佳音樂劇女主角等許多獎項。

「真善美」電影版於1965年首映，造成美國電影史上的傳奇，是美國電影五○、 六○年代最賣座電影之一。

「真善美」電影拍攝的地點已成為奧地利薩爾茲堡著名觀光景點。

達菩上校於1947年逝世，享年57歲。瑪利亞生於1905年1月26日，於1987年3月逝世，與上校一同長眠於美國維蒙特州達菩家庭莊園，享年82歲。奧地利政府曾頒贈一等十字榮譽勳章給瑪利亞，以表彰她對增進奧地利與美國的文化交流。
