歐盟電子電機設備中危害物質禁用指令( Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substance in EEE , ROHS ). RoHS指令之主要內容目標： 本指令目標在於使各成員國對於電機電子設備中限制使用危害物質的法律趨於一致，以利保護人類健康並促進廢電機 .... blah, blah, blah..

Though it may be a late response, a number of electronic industry experts are questioning the scientific reasoning behind the EU RoHS. Those speaking out against the legislation claim the EU did not base the directive on robost science. They point to a recent study that shows the conversion to lead-free solder actually runs contrary to the best interests of the environment.

It raises the issue that RoHS is based on faulty assumptions about environmental damage. RoHS was based on outdated concepts, such as lead leaching into the soil from discarded electronic products, that have since been proven scientifically wrong. RoHS dissenters have created a website call Pushback.

Being an EE design engineer, I've known darn well how this RoHS SNAFU has sabotaged the electronic industry. With all the compliance and the regulations, commercial industry are forced to eat all the RoHS related cost. Worse yet, the electronic product become much less reliable, due to the lead-free solder, which operates at higher and narrower temperature range than the traditional lead solder. Think about this, you need to use better equipment and more energy for the lead-free assembly, and your end product are less reliable. Then you can proudly throw away the junk and declare that the junk won't pollute the environment.

Gush, have we missed something here? How about all the resources you have wasted away?

Next time when you return that newly bought but choked cell phone to the store, please feel free to extend your middle finger to the store clerks then tell them:

"RoHS sucks"!!
