Black Hand Nakasi Founded in 1996, was supported by the ICLE (Informational Center of Labor Education), the major radical labor organization in Taiwan, and CALL (Committee Action of Labor Legislation), an union link. Member of band are union organizers, workers and students.
Black Hand Nakasi (BHN) released their first CD album in 1997, the process of music production was all DIY, and it was the very first time the combination of music and social movement. In the first album “ Lucky? A Shit!”, BHN collect the struggle songs in past 10yrs of labor movement in Taiwan, and also write new songs to speak out workers’ and grassroots’ voices.
BHN notices that, low class people was limited to access the cultural resources, they were totally taken off the ability to do music or any other kind of cultural performances. And by the way, except of commercial popular culture, “Art “ ,”Culture” was made for upper class, not for lower lives. Labors only can find their way through KaraOK to find very little pieces to express there lives, feelings.
To empower working class and the disadvantaged minority take back their right to Voice, BHN works hard in music education with labors, assists labors use their “language” to sing out, speak out..
BHN is not only a band for movement, they work hard in the practice of music and social movement, in the process of collective creation, together with workers to form a culture belong to working class, the disadvantage minors, the grassroots!
