有誰經歷過彈著結他的西洋民歌時代﹐有誰年少時﹐身邊的人都叫做 John, Paul, Mary 或 Peter呢﹖看似很普通的名字﹐不過在60年代的美國﹐就是有一隊名字那麼普通﹐卻又是鼎鼎大名的民歌組合 Peter Paul & Mary﹐可惜日前 Mary 病逝了。

1961年﹐Newport Folk Festival 創辦人之一 George Wein 的拍擋 Albert Grossman﹐一手把2男1女撮合成民歌組合﹐經過一年的指導﹐才在New York City Greenwich Village 的一間咖啡店處女登台﹐瞬即引起大眾注意。這個組合有 Peter Yarrow﹑Noel Paul Stookey 及 Mary Travers﹐三人分別 Peter 夠帥﹑Paul 夠風趣﹐他經常在演唱會中大講笑話﹐至於漂亮的 Mary 就一定要用“索”來形容了。三把聲音其實各有特色﹐但是經過精心設計的合音編排﹐出來的 Harmony 卻引又是那麼和諧。

1962年﹐Peter Paul & Mary 發行了首張同名專輯﹐即在 Billboard Album Chart 10大之內達10個月﹐若以20大計算則有23個星期﹐然後專輯一直徘徊在Top 100中達3年半。雖然在單曲榜中﹐只有 Lemon Tree 攀到第35位﹔If I Had A Hammer 則取的第10名﹐不過熟識民歌的朋友﹐那個不會唱幾句。就算兩張單曲均是 Cover Version﹐但是專輯中卻有許多Paul 與 Peter 的原創作品﹐包括 Cruel War﹑Sorrow等﹐而且就算如翻唱歌曲 500 Miles﹑Bamboo﹑If I Had A Hammer 或 Where Have All The Flowers Gone 都極具組合的獨特風格。這一些歌曲到如今還是經常被傳唱﹐甚至家長們都喜歡以取來教導小孩﹐以培養其音樂興趣。

Mary Travers生於 Louisville﹐但自小就遷到 New York City 居住﹐在組成 PP&M 前﹐她經都曾參加學校的合唱團﹑民歌隊﹐甚至也會唱百老匯﹐可說極有歌唱天份。在50年代Washington Square Park﹐那是一班民歌愛好者聚集的地方﹐Mary 就經常現身﹐在每個星期日下午跟她的一眾民歌愛好者合唱。而她的音樂根源可說深受 Paul Robeson﹑Josh White﹑Jo Mapes﹑Bob Gibson 及 Weavers 成員Ronnie Gilbert 的影響。自1961年組成 PP&M 之後﹐Mary 與 Peter 和 Paul合作了近50年﹐期間出版了Studio Album+Live Album+精選共26張﹐更取得5次Grammy Awards﹑13首 Top 40 歌曲 (包括6張Top 10單曲)﹐還有8張金唱片及5張白金唱片。

雖然3人曾在1970年解散﹐至1978憑 Reunion 專輯復合﹐但是這個組合卻影響了後世的音樂發展﹐他們的歌曲比一般流行曲歌詞更有意思﹐時常傳遞人權及反戰訊息﹐在 Beatles 的 Rock Music 充拆著整個世界之餘﹐他們的 Folk Music 也有其一片天﹔而且更因為他們灌錄了 Gordon Lightfoot﹑Bob Dylan 及 John Denver 的作品﹐帶紅了他們。至於 Mary 在70年代 PP&M 解散時﹐也曾出版過5張個人專輯﹐分別是Mary (1971)﹑Morning Glory﹑(1972)﹑All My Choices (1973) 及 Circles (1974) 及 It's In Everyone Of Us (1978)﹐雖然沒有取得巨大成功﹐但是她早在 John Denver 走紅前﹐就唱了他的作品 Follow Me﹐此外還有寫給女兒的“Erika With The Windy Yellow Hair”﹐那是一段有背景音樂的口白。

近年 PP&M 雖然再沒有在流行榜取得甚麼成績﹐不過仍偶有新作面世﹐而且更經常到處演唱﹐在2001年3人更曾來港舉行音樂會。2005年Mary Travers 患上了血癌﹐並於翌年接受骨髓移植後﹐病情好轉﹐也公開表演﹐可惜近年病情再度惡化﹐去年更要帶著氧氣設備坐在輪椅上演唱﹐早前 Peter Yarrow 更在電台訪問中透露﹕Mary 應該不可能再有機會跟他們一起公開演唱了。直到9月16日﹐Mary 終於在Connecticut 州的Danbury Hospital 病逝﹐終年72。
