當 Simon & Garfunkel 在1970年出版了“Bridge Over Troubled Water”專輯之後﹐兩人亦隨即拆夥﹐唱片公司亦於1972年為他們推出了首張精選輯“Simon & Garfunkel Greatest Hits”﹐收錄好歌14首﹐不過其中四首 Live Recording﹐估計是1969年的音樂會盛況。

現今精選CD繁多﹐可是那個年代經歌手/樂團官方發行的精選唱片並不多﹐而且出版了一張之後﹐就會長有長賣﹐之後或許會有 Volume 2﹐不過大多不會重覆收錄歌曲的。Simon & Garfunkel Greatest Hits 算是筆者對他們的音樂的入門﹐雖然自己要的幾首歌曲也收錄了﹐但是卻很不喜歡那幾首突然掌聲彭湃的Live Recording﹐尤其這張唱片﹐或許是香港版吧﹐總感覺歌曲錄音沒甚麼質感﹐後來到CD面世﹐筆者會買來 原裝專輯﹐或許也是因為要一窺歌曲的原貌。

從 Simon & Garfunkel Greatest Hits唱片﹐加上買了日本版 Master Sound的 Graduate LP﹐還有哥哥借來的 Bridge Over Troubled Water 專輯的日本版CD﹐筆者就錄了一盒純 Studio Recording 的精選卡帶。那個時候還有閒情錄歌﹐自已挑選歌曲﹐錄完後還頗為滿意﹐聽了許多年。

這張精選於1990年發行為CD﹐不過筆者卻沒有購買﹐也是因為討厭那幾首 Live Recording 之過﹐不過後來有位朋友很喜歡Simon & Garfunkel﹐筆者就送了一張美國版作為生日禮物。

Simon & Garfunkel Greatest Hits 於1972年6月14日發行﹐在美國流行榜第5﹐英國方面得第2﹐單在美國銷量已賣出1400萬張 (14白金)。Columbia 為它發了一張雙A Side單曲﹐乃是 America (1968年 Studio Recording) / For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" (Live)﹐可惜在流行榜上並不成功﹐America 在Billboard 取得第97位﹐英國取得第25位﹔至於 For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" (Live) 則取得Billboard第53位。然而相隔39年﹐這批1969年的演唱會錄音﹐也正式發行為“Live 1969”(2008/Columbia) 專輯了。

雖然Simon & Garfunkel 兩人拆夥了﹐但是兩人又不致於反目成仇﹐1972年1月Paul Simon 首先推出單飛專輯“Paul Simon”﹐而翌年9月Art Garfunkel 推出首張個人專輯Angel Clare 時﹐Paul Simon 也為他兼任結他手及合音。到1975年﹐這對冤家又再度碰頭﹐並且合作了單曲“My Little Town”﹐只是這首歌曲之後均收錄於各人自己的專輯中﹐分別是 Garfunkel 的 “Breakaway”(1975/Columbia) 專輯及 Paul 的 “Still Crazy After All These Years” (1975/Columbia) 專輯﹐而且還同日發行﹐此單曲得到 Billboard 第9位。

兩人另一次合作發生於1977年﹐不過加入了第3者。當時 Art Garfunkel 發行第3張專輯“Watermark”﹐可惜首張單曲Crying In My Sleep 未能打上流行榜﹐唱片公司大為緊張﹐於是火速加入了 翻唱歌 (What A) Wonderful World 在專輯中再度推出﹐這版本由 Paul Simon 及 James Taylor 為他合音。當然﹐Simon & Garfunkel 的故事未完﹐到1981年﹐還有 Central Park 盛大的復合演唱會。

(What A) Wonderful World - Art Garfunkel / Paul Simon / James Taylor﹕原收錄於“Watermark”(1978/Columbia) 專輯中﹐它也作單曲發行﹐得到美國Billboard第17位。此曲原唱是 Sam Cooke (1960/Keen)﹐近年在亞洲也有林憶蓮﹑齊豫﹑劉美君的翻唱版﹐收錄於林憶蓮的“美妙世界”(1997/滾石) 專輯中。
