Simon & Garfunkel - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (1966)

01 Scarborough Fair/Canticle [US#11]
02 Patterns
03 Cloudy
04 Homeward Bound [US#5/UK#9]

06 The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)
07 The Dangling Conversation [US#25]

09 A Simple Desultory Philippic (Or How I Was Robert McNamara'd Into Submission)

11 A Poem On The Underground Wall
12 7 O'Clock News/Silent Night
2001 Version CD Bonus Track:

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall﹑A Simple Desultory Philippic 及Patterns。Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall 其實在上一年的 Sounds Of Silence Sessions 時已灌錄﹐並且作了 I Am A Rock 的 B Side﹐它與A Simple Desultory Philippic 跟 Paul Simon Song Book 的原版本比較﹐差異頗大 。

The Side Of A Hill改頭換面﹐把歌詞融入Canticle中﹐成為Scarborough Fair的合音。

(Traditional / Paul Simon / Art Garfunkel)

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground)
Without no seams nor needlework
(Blankets and bedclothes a child of the mountains)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)

Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsely, sage, rosemary, and thyme
(Washed is the ground with so many tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather
(War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions)
Parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Generals order their soldiers to kill)
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather
(And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten)
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

(Paul Simon)

I'm sitting in the railway station.
Got a ticket for my destination.
On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand.
And ev'ry stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one-man band.
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.

Ev'ry day's an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines.
And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories
And ev'ry stranger's face I see reminds me that I long to be,
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.

Tonight I'll sing my songs again,
I'll play the game and pretend.
But all my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony I need someone to comfort me.
Homeward bound,
I wish I was,
Homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me.
Silently for me.

The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)﹕這條橋是指紐約市的Queensboro Bridge﹐Paul 旅居英國近一年﹐在當地心情低沉﹐但是當The Sounds Of Silence 紅起來時﹐他也回到老家了﹐在心情大好之時﹐經過熟悉的Queensboro Bridge﹐有感而發寫了此曲。此曲其後成為了 單曲 At The Zoo (1967/Columbia) 的 B Side。
(Paul Simon)

Slow down, you move too fast.
You got to make the morning last.
Just kicking down the cobble stones.
Looking for fun and feelin' groovy.
Hello lamppost,
What cha knowing?
I've come to watch your flowers growing.
Ain't cha got no rhymes for me?
Doot-in' doo-doo,
Feelin' groovy.

Got no deeds to do,
No promises to keep.
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep.
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me.
Life, I love you,
All is groovy.

The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine
(Paul Simon)

It’s a still life water color,
Of a now late afternoon,
As the sun shines through the curtained lace
And shadows wash the room.
And we sit and drink our coffee
Couched in our indifference,
Like shells upon the shore
You can hear the ocean roar
In the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs,
Are the borders of our lives.

And you read your Emily Dickinson,
And I my Robert Frost,
And we note our place with bookmarkers
That measure what we’ve lost.
Like a poem poorly written
We are verses out of rhythm,
Couplets out of rhyme,
In syncopated time
Lost in the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs,
Are the borders of our lives.

Yes, we speak of things that matter,
With words that must be said,
Can analysis be worthwhile?
Is the theater really dead?
And how the room is softly faded
And I only kiss your shadow,
I cannot feel your hand,
You’re a stranger now unto me
Lost in the dangling conversation.
And the superficial sighs,
In the borders of our lives.

For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her﹕此曲其後成為了 Bookends 專輯單曲“A Hazy Shade Of Winter”(1966/Columbia) 的 B Side。
(Paul Simon)

What I dream I had:
Pressed in organdy;
Clothed in crinoline of smoky burgundy;
Softer than the rain.
I wandered empty streets
Down past the shop displays.
I heard cathedral bells
Tripping down the alley ways,
As I walked on.

And when you ran to me
Your cheeks flushed with the night.
We walked on frosted fields of juniper and lamplight,
I held your hand.
And when I awoke and felt you warm and near,
I kissed your honey hair with my grateful tears.
Oh I love you, girl.
Oh, I love you.

Hi Muzikland

Dear

Elfin Knight﹕

Riddles Wisely Expounded

Dear

Dear Muzikland,

For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her

Hi Muzikland

Dear

Scarborough Fair
