驟耳聽來﹐其實許多 Gerry & The Pacemakers 的歌曲﹐跟早期的Beatles 沒有兩樣﹐可能因為同是經常在Hamburg 及 Liverpool 演出﹐音樂根源很相似﹑又同是由Brian Epstein 擔任經理人﹑另外唱片監制也是 George Martin﹐故此玩奏一些快歌的風格都很接近。

不過 Gerry & Pacemakers 也有不同的地方﹐例如他們會以 Cover Version 為單曲﹐而且演灌錄 Ballad 也比Beatles 早﹐好幾首歌曲配以 George Martin 的弦樂編曲﹐都是很動人的作品。1963年12月﹐EMI Columbia 就把他們單曲“You’ll Never Walk Alone”加上Jambalaya﹑Chills 及A Shot of Rhythm and Blues結集為一張EP發售﹐該張EP 登上流行榜第8位。

筆者最愛的Gerry & Pacemakers歌曲﹐是一些以弦樂伴奏的 Ballad﹐主音Gerry Marsden 的聲音就是那麼自然﹐聽起來就像安慰藉心靈的聲音。第一首為他的聲音吸引的﹐就是 You’ll Never Walk Alone。若說梅艷芳的“孤身走我路”是那麼的淒涼﹐那麼 You’ll Never Walk Alone 就會成為疲乏的人的鼓勵。原是1945年Rodgers & Hammerstein 音樂劇“Carousel”的插曲﹐有無數人翻唱﹐因為其勵志的歌詞﹐也常為足球會的歌曲。它是陪伴Gerry Marsden 成長的歌曲﹐所以得到兩首冠軍單曲之後﹐他認為可以演繹一首Cover Version來延續其冠軍緣﹐終於這張單曲在英國也取得冠軍﹐並且停留了4星期。

A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues 原屬Arthur Alexander 的歌曲﹐Gerry & Pacemakers 的 A-Go-Go 曲式﹐熱鬧非常。此曲由無數人翻唱﹐但是真正在英國流行榜取得點成績的﹐是 Johnny Kidd & The Pirates 的 (1963/HMV) 版本﹐但也只得到第48位而已。

可能因為同是 Hamberg 與 Liverpool 的 Live Band﹐所以大家都常有相同的喜歡曲目﹐故此 Beatles 成名之初﹐也在 BBC 三度留下了A Shot Of Rhythm and Blues 的電台錄音﹐當然這也可能是Brian Epstein 之故﹐不過據說這也是John Lennon 很喜歡的歌曲。
