Beatles - Free As A Bird / Christmas Time (Is Here Again) (1995)

隨著 Live At The BBC 專輯出版一年後﹐沒想還有 Beatles 的 Project 陸續面世﹐而且還有新歌﹐那是拜科技所賜的Free As A Bird。

Free As A Bird 本是由John Lennon 於1977年灌錄的Demo﹐1994年時﹐John Lennon 被列入 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame﹐在儀式中Paul 跟 Yoko 相遇﹐談及由餘下 Beatles 成員﹐把他的遺作加工成為Beatles新歌﹐於是她就給了他們4首歌﹐其中一首就是 Free As A Bird 了。因為此曲尚未完成﹐當時 John 只以鋼琴伴奏﹐並使用手提錄音機錄音而已﹐故此Beatles的三名成員就在歌曲中加建﹐仿似早期 Paul 與 John 合作寫歌一樣﹐而此曲也是少有在創作人中列明4人的名字。不過Free As A Bird不是由他們過往緊密合作的 George Martin監制﹐卻換上了70年代的 Beatles 迷 - Electric Light Orchestra 的靈魂人物 Jeff Lynne 操刀﹐因為他的聽覺力已衰退。他們在原有的卡帶Demo中﹐再加上 Effect 及後來 Paul﹑George 及 Ringo 的伴奏與合音而成﹐於是在創作的精神上及 Recording 中都由四人一同參與。Free As A Bird 在英美同步於1995年12月12日出版﹐在英國取得流行榜第2位﹐至於在美國﹐則是 Billboard第6位。

至於 Free As A Bird 的 B Side 是舊作 Christmas Time (Is Here Again)﹐它灌錄於1967年﹐是當年給歌迷會中願意訂購Beatles唱片的會員。原錄音長達6分多鐘﹐但是1995年的版本則被剪短成約3分多鐘而已。

这首歌出现得刚刚好. 全世界正又在怀念他们的时候,Free As A Bird 就来了。

( Oasis 乐团正冒出头。有人吹水说他们像是新一代的The Beatles。结果，勾起许多人的回忆... )

"Free As A Bird" is really such a sad song. To me, it was 3 men mourning the passing of a friend and the silly things they do to hurt each other. To the then-remaining 3 members of the Beatles, John was "free as a bird" while they still have to live with the band's legacy. George's slide guitar solo was like someone crying in remembrance and in pain.

Dear 飛羊﹐

Oasis 太喜歡Beatles 了﹐所以也很模仿他們﹐不過雖然他們的音樂我也很喜歡﹐但風格仍只是一個 Copy而已﹐很難超越Beatles的經典﹐近年他們都沉寂下來了。

Dear Soundboy﹐

Ringo Starr 也曾表示﹐在灌錄Free As The Bird 時﹐情緒是很受激動的﹐因為再一次合作﹐三人聚頭﹐卻沒有了John。這首歌在Paul的Home Studio灌錄﹐我想若是在 Abbey Road Studio 錄的話﹐那感覺更淒然。

其實四人的聚頭﹐只是靠著科技的帶來的假象﹐Free As A Bird不錯是一首好歌﹐但是John 的聲音太被扭曲了﹐錄音音色也太像ELO。一首全新的Beatles 歌曲其實只是給樂迷一場慰藉而已。現在 George 也走了﹐這一個經典也正式劃上一個句號吧。
