1966年3月 ﹐John Lennon 在一個英國記者的訪問中﹐表示現今 Beatles 比耶穌基督更受歡迎﹐此舉即引來美國公憤﹐在美國及南非許多群眾發起消毀 Beatles 唱片活動。

後來備受壓力的 John 終於在1966年8月11日的 Chicago 演唱會前夕﹐在記者招待會中公開道歉。雖然如此﹐下一張英美兩地的單曲 Paperback Writer 在美國於5月30日發行﹐比英國6月10月還早。

創作Paperback Writer 是 Paul McCartney 的想法﹐當時他駕長途車到 John 家中寫歌﹐許多時候都會在車程中構思著一些歌曲意念﹐於是他想到寫一首歌由 Dear Sir or Madam 開始﹐然後是一封信﹐John 聽到這意念﹐非常贊同﹐於是就共同創作了這首歌了。Beatles 因為分身乏術﹐於是開始了拍宣傳短片作宣傳﹐Paperback Writer就是早期的MV﹐它在英國出版單曲前夕於BBC節目中播放﹐也於美國 Ed Sullivan 節目播映﹐最後此曲在英國及美國Billboard皆稱冠兩星期。

Paperback Writer 的 B Side 是Rain﹐是 Ringo 認為是他鼓技最出色的歌曲﹐而因為錄音時採用了Abbey Road 錄音室最新式的Automatic Transient Overload Control 系統﹐故此聲音非常響亮﹐歌曲也顯得很重型。Rain 在美國Billboard 得到第23位。
