有一晚﹐Paul McCartney 在睡夢中聽到一首調子﹐醒來之後他立刻坐在鋼琴旁把歌曲記下來﹐後來他四處問人﹐看看會不會是他孩童時聽到的舊調﹐然而大家都聽不出是那一首舊歌﹐於是他放心了﹐這首歌曲就成為了日後聞名於世的 Yesterday。

當 Yesterday 還沒有填上歌詞時﹐Paul McCartney 只胡亂填上一些字﹐當時他填上的歌詞就是Scrambled Eggs。後來在拍電影 Help 的時候﹐因為場景中有一台鋼琴﹐Paul 乘著有空閒時間﹐就彈著這首Scrambled Eggs﹐令到導演Richard Lester 都聽到煩厭﹐更聲言要把鋼琴搬走。當Beatles 四子走在一起聽 Paul 這首歌時﹐Ringo 認為無需用鼓﹐John 與 George 都覺得無需加入更多的結他﹐於是 Yesterday 就變成猶如 Paul McCartney 單飛獨奏的作品﹐其後唱片監制 George Martin 找來四人的 String Session 為他伴奏。Yesterday 在英國沒有發行單曲﹐倒是得到美國Capitol的垂青﹐在1965年9月13日發行﹐並於10月2日登上Billboard冠軍達4星期﹐而且5星期內銷量已過百萬張。

Yesterday 本來交由 Billy J. Kramer 來唱﹐可是對方拒絕了﹐然而這首歌發表之後﹐Beatles 沒有在英國發行成單曲﹐估計這首歌曲太過個人之故﹐所以沒多久就由 Matt Monro翻唱灌錄。至於Beatles 於1976年才在英國把它發行單曲﹐但是 B Side 則改為I Should Have Known Better﹐登上英國流行榜第8位而已。當時Beatles 約滿了EMI﹐於是唱片公司在同一日內為他們發行了許多張單曲﹐單是英國Top 100之內﹐就有23張Beatles 單曲。

Yesterday﹕由 Matt Monro 翻唱 (1965/Parlophone)﹐取得英國流行榜第8位﹐之後收錄於“Hits Of Yesterday”(1965/Parlophone) 專輯中。

Yesterday 相信是史上被翻唱灌錄最多的歌曲﹐保守估計已超過3000個 Cover Version﹐它尤其受到獨唱歌星的歡迎﹐不過筆者擁有由 Seekers 翻唱的版本﹐也是一個不錯聽的 Version。

Yesterday 的 B Side 是Act Naturally﹐若說 A Side 是 Serious 的﹐那麼由 Ringo Starr 主唱的 B Side 就屬輕鬆搞笑之作。Act Naturally 本由Buck Owens 主唱 (1963/Capitol)﹐而 Beatles 的版本得到Billboard第47位。

Act Naturally﹕它收錄於英國的“Help”(1965/Parlophone) 專輯中﹐在美國則收錄於“Yesterday and Today”(1966/Capitol) 專輯中。
