1978年9月ABBA推出全新歌曲 Summer Night City﹐這首歌曲本來打算作為全新專輯“Voulez-Vous”(1979/Polydor) 的主打單曲﹐可是後來卻成為了 ABBA 少數沒有收錄在專輯中的單曲。

在ABBA歌曲流行的時候﹐筆者並沒有跟隨他們每一張專輯﹐其實大部份歌曲都是從他們的精選或香港Polydor 發行的雜錦精選合輯中認識的。記得當時是從一張 Polygram 79 (1979/Polydor) 合輯中聽到 Summer Night City的﹐強勁的節拍﹐非常搶耳﹐第一次聽便非常喜歡。

Summer Night City也是少數 ABBA不在瑞典灌錄的歌曲﹐因為當時 Polar新建的錄音室尚未完工﹐於是他們就選在美國的Metronome Studio錄音。此曲在老家瑞典得到冠軍﹐可是這也是他們在瑞典最後一張冠軍單曲了。除此之外﹐在芬蘭及愛爾蘭也成冠﹐另外在比利時﹑挪威﹑荷蘭及瑞士均是流行榜 Top 5的歌曲。至於在德國得到第6 ﹐而澳洲及新西蘭則分別得到第18及第37。

當播放 Summer Night City單曲版時﹐若不留神﹐實在會把它第一個音符嚇到﹐原來這個版本是經過剪輯的。原裝版本會先來一段慢版﹐然後才轉到歌曲那“彭”的一聲﹐這種轉接較順暢﹐滿有戲劇性效果﹐也是筆者喜歡的一種音樂處理模式。我還是要購買“ABBA Thank You For The Music”(1994/Polar/Polydor) Boxset才首次聽到這個 Unreleased Version﹐個人喜愛程度比單曲版更甚。

Summer Night City 的 B Side則是一首 Folk Song Medley﹐包括了Pick A Bale Of Cotton﹑On Top Of Old Smokey﹑Midnight Special。這是絕少的非 ABBA成員創作的歌曲﹐原收錄於一張1975年德國的籌款合輯Stars Im Zeichen Eines Guten Sterns中。單曲收錄的是一個 Remix版﹐至於原版則收錄於“ABBA Thank You For The Music”(1994/Polar/Polydor) Boxset 中。
