聽了音樂多年﹐許多時候都會較喜愛過去的舊歌﹐或者因為以前的歌星甚至唱片公司都有很有個性﹐倒是現在許多唱片公都歸入幾間跨國機構下﹐這種個人特性也隨之而減少。

70年代末﹐Donna Summer 聲勢一時無兩﹐雖然同期有許多 Disco 音樂出現﹐但是她的歌曲就很具個人風格﹐而且這種音樂味道也只有她在 Casablanca 旗下才有﹐就算她與Pete Bellotte及 Giorgio Moroder這個鐵三角一同搬到新唱片公司 Geffen 旗下﹐不論流行程度﹐甚至那種 Summer Sound也一併改變了。

1979年 Donna深感在 Casablanca得不到自由﹐筆者在收音機就聽到因為 Casablanca被寶麗金收購了﹐她不習慣新公司的模式﹐於是當 On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II 出版後﹐她便蟬過別枝﹐跳糟到新成立的 Geffen去。這時已踏入80年代﹐Donna也有巨大的改變﹐包括她的生活從新在信仰上出發﹐另外也於是年面對其第二度婚姻。首張加盟 Geffen的專輯為The Wanderer (1980/Geffen)﹐製作班底仍有Pete Bellotte及 Giorgio Moroder﹐但歌曲風格與 Casablanca 截然不同。雖然至今筆者仍不習慣她這種轉變﹐然而她的決定是正確的﹐因為 Disco 音樂熱潮總有下滑的一天﹐而她就先知先覺去改變﹐現在回顧她的音樂﹐都是很典型 Eighties 的 Rock﹑New Wave 等﹐可是她的 Casablanca 作品實在太成功了﹐故此樂迷也實在適應不了這改變。這張專輯中除了 The Wanderer 得到美國Billboard 第3位之外﹐Cold Love 得到第33位及Who Do You Think You're Foolin' 得到第40位﹐成績每況愈下﹐至於首兩張單曲在英國更是打不進 Top 40。

翌年 Donna Summer 又製作了雙唱片集 I’m A Rainbow﹐唱 R&B﹑Pop 甚至 Musical 歌曲 Don’t Cry For Me Argentina﹐然而 Geffen 拒絕出版﹐只有 Highway Runner 及 Romeo 出現於 Fast Times At Ridgemont High 及Flashdance 的電影原聲中﹐這專輯要到1996年才由 Mercury 出版。之後Donna 又在Geffen 旗下出版了以她為名的 Donna Summer (1982/Geffen) 專輯﹐並且改由 Quincy Jones 製作﹐幕後也動用了 David Foster﹑Bruce Springteen 等人﹐歌曲風格有 Soul﹑R&B 及 Gospel 等﹐可是成績還是強差人意。還記得當時香港的電台DJ 介紹她的新曲 Love Is In Control﹐可是聽完後﹐筆者完全失望﹐現在重溫﹐效果並不這樣差勁﹐或者當時還是期望她會回歸 Disco舞曲之故吧。

1983年 Donna 的 She Works Hard For The Money專輯又一再遭受 Geffen 拒絕發行﹐於是她只得轉向已買下 Casablanca 的 Polygram﹐雖然 Donna 跟他們鬧得不歡而散﹐然而 Polygram 還是答尤以Mercury 廠牌為她發行該專輯。有說當時 Geffen 答允讓她跟 Polygram 簽下一張專輯的合約﹐也聽聞她違反合約﹐不顧 Geffen 而簽約 Polygram﹐經過一場官司之後﹐這一張專輯之後她要重回 Geffen 履行剩下的合約﹐不過這些都是從電台節目聽來的﹐至今翻查資料又不能引證﹐所以不能作準。從 She Works Hard For The Money抽取的首張單曲為同名標題歌曲﹐Donna的聲勢又再回來了﹐這首向女工致敬的歌曲﹐得到美國 Billboard第3位﹐並且在 R&B榜得到3星期冠軍﹐並且在英國流行榜取得第25位﹐在美國MTV也得到熱播﹐香港當年雖然沒有專屬 Music Channel﹐也還是該年熱播了許久的MV。之後她還發了與 Musical Youth合唱的Unconditional Love ﹐在英國取得第14位﹐然而這張專輯實在缺乏舞曲﹐在美國難以承接She Works Hard For The Money 之勢﹐幸好憑He's A Rebel 取得Grammy Award 的 Best Inspirational Performance。

經過一輪 She Works Hard For Money 熱潮之後﹐本以為她重返 Geffen 會大有作為﹐可是雖然任用該專輯的製作班底的Cats Without Claws (1984/Geffen) 及之後的 All Systems Go (1987/Geffen) 都再次使她沉寂下來﹐似乎她跟 Geffen 實在無緣份。1989年Geffen 三度拒絕發行她的專輯﹐這一次是 Another Place and Time﹐終於華納旗下的 Atlantic 唱片同意跟 Geffen 買下她的唱片合約﹐她的專輯才得以出版。因為當時 Geffen 的唱片交由華納發行﹐所以基本上對 Donna 沒有改變﹐而 Atlantic 提議她跟超紅監制組合S.A.W. 合作﹐於是她的歌曲 This Time I Know It’s For Real 再一次打入英美流行榜10大﹐然而那只是 S.A.W 的風格﹐Donna 的味道卻盪然無存了﹐而Mistaken Identity (1991/Atlantic) 專輯又再徹底失敗。1992年她再次跟Giorgio Moroder合作﹐可是單曲 Carry On卻沒有為這對老搭檔帶來神跡。
