Fabulous Echoes - Breakin’ It Up At Dukes! Recorded “Live"
The Fabulous Echoes Breakin’ It Up At Dukes! Recorded “Live”。

It was fabulous, indeed, the way Honolulu took to THE FABULOUS ECHOES! The 'take' began when they first came from Hong Kong to Hawaii more than two years ago. Since then it has developed into a fantastic love-affair.
It was early this year at Duke Kahanamoku's where this album was recorded 'live,' that the romance actually happened. The city's pop music lovers really flipped over the Echoes in a big way; turning out in large numbers nightly to fill the Club largest in famed Waikiki Beach and home of Hawaii's great native-son entertainer, Don Ho.
This album gives an excellent insight into this exciting six-man unit, showing how versatile a group of performers they are. They can play almost anything, and play it good. . . from rock 'n roll, to sweet, danceable ballads, to pop hits from foreign countries (the boys sing in French, Spanish, Portuguese, English, Hebrew, and two Filipino dialects), to rhythm-and-blues and jazz.
From the moment they took the stage at Duke's for their first show, all the way through to their last number, the crowd was, with the Echoes all the way - as evidenced by the applause heaped on the boys from Hong Kong, number after number.
Tony Ruivivar, Jr., on lead guitar, and his brother Danny, on drums, are Filipino lads who were born and raised in Hong Kong. So, too, are Terry Lucido, piano, and Bert Sagum, percussion. Stan;Robertson, bass man, is a native of Scotland; he joined the group in Hong Kong. Don Gay, on organ, trumpet, clarinet, saxaphone, and trombone, is the only American in the group; he hails from Oklahoma. It is the rare combination of his instruments, blended with those of the other Echoes, which gives them such a fat, big band sound. In many of their imaginative arrangements, the use of their voices doubling their instruments, makes it hard to believe that they number only six!
This is a solid-sounding outfit. It's all here in this album, recorded exactly as they performed it at Duke's. I particularly like their versions of "MAS QUE NADA" and "GUANTANAMERA," not to mention "WALK ON THE WILD SIDE" and just about everything else they do. As a matter of fact, one of the most exciting things I've ever heard or seen was their rendition of "TRAVEL ON" and "GLORY, GLORY, HALLELUJAH". They were closing one of their shows and dedicated it to any and all servicemen. Before the number was finished, every one in the huge room was on his feet, whistling and cheering until hoarse! It was electrifying. I hope you find it as memorable when you, too, hear it, as recorded that night.
It all adds up for fun listening. Take particular note of the enthusiastic applause the Echoes earn. It illustrates, better than anything we could say, the affection and esteem Honolulu holds for this young group of performers who are destined to become great stars!
