Menace - Strawberry Sundae / I Love You
Menace比 Teddy Robin & The Playboys稍後才組成﹐成員包括 Joe Chen 陳任 (主音)﹑Dennis Yu (貝斯)﹑ Derek Cheung (主音結他) 及Robert Chan (鼓)﹐樂隊名稱來自漫畫 Dennis & Menace﹐由 Dennis 改名的。
據90年代一篇陳任的訪問稱樂團成員大多是來自中上階級家庭﹐早期的鼓手 Tony Fan便是立法局議員及骨科名醫方心讓的兒子﹐而Dennis的父親就是大律師余叔紹。陳任加入 Menace 半年後便參加了 Talent Quest 及星島業餘歌唱比賽﹐兩個比賽均得到第4名﹐不久EMI 即邀請加盟﹐但是當時簽約 EMI 的本地樂團都紅不起來﹐故他們也沒有簽約﹐後來約1967/1968年間﹐鑽石唱片主動邀請﹐他們便加盟旗下。同期陳任入讀浸會﹐不單於 China Mail 寫 Teen Page﹐更為每星期隨報附送的 Round Up 出任編輯﹐後來更為商業電台擔任DJ。至於Menace也曾在 Teddy Robin攪的 In Place Club 星期日 Tea Dance 時段演奏﹐另一方面也長駐於半島酒店表演。Menace不久因陳任工作繁忙﹐加上樂團成員往外地升學就解散了。

I remembered the flip side of "Strawberry Sundae" was "You don't even wink your eyes" which was more popular than "Strawberry Sundae" at that time. Both songs were composed by them. They had covered The Poeple's "I love you" which was captured the hearts of their fans.

Ha, I can't believe I missed this song because when I was writing the article, I was listening to those diamond recording CD issued by Polygram duirng the 90's. This was a song I often heard during my early days. But somehow, I eventually missed it, so now I put it back. Thanks.

"I love you" was composed by the bassist of the Zombies Mr. Chris White. The Zombies signed to Decca and recorded their first hit "She's Not There" which was released in mid-1964. The next year, the Zombies' "Tell Her No" became a huge seller in both England and the United States. Doris Hardy, a local female singer sang this song on TV very often during the mid 1960s. But the Zombies' subsequent recordings in 1966 including "I Love You," "Indication," "Whenever You're Ready," and "Is This the Dream" were also of high quality, none achieved the success of "She's not there" and "Tell her no".
I still have the Zombies' LP containing "I love you".
Back to the Menace, they also covered "One, two three red light" and some other bubble gum music in the 1960s which is not really the kind of music I like, sorry, guys!!!

I don't have any Zombies LP, I heard the song "I Love You" when I was a kid, so actually I didn't know what version I heard at that time, it could be Zombies or Menace. What I remember was that my brother reocrded the song to tape from a fake record and it didn't have information or even correct spelling of the singers.
For the song "She's Not There", the first version I heard was Santana, but the reason I knew Zombies was the song “Time Of The Seasons”.

"I Love You"這首歌雖然是Zombies結他手Chris White在1966年的作品及原唱，但該歌卻是由另一隊在當年代寂寂無名的People合，於1968年把歌曲略作編改及重唱後才廣受歡迎。尤其是當時的本地樂壇，電台DJ日夜播放，風靡一時，我也是因被該版本吸引，從而走上熱愛收聽西洋歌曲之路.....
其實People的"I Love You"版本，最為吸引之處是它的前奏部份，由主音結他、間歇性的鼓鈸聲、些許電子琴聲、及樂隊成員的伴和聲音，組成了那般美妙的起首Instrumental，節奏高低起伏，並即匯合樂曲的首句簡單及主要表達歌詞 - I Love You，I Love You，I Love You, Yes I Do But The Words Won't Come .....
EMI Capital在1994年，曾把People的"I Love You"原LP版，以CD形式限量出版，而本地的KPS金獅影音連鎖店新港中心分店，在1997年也曾有該CD出售，但因我當時只是間中光顧該店，致未能購到這珍品。現時只有網上的二手出售，但也被炒高到差不多壹百美元。

I have a different copy of the Rock -N- Roll's Greatest Hits of All Time, Vol. 3 containing the People's "I love you". It is a 2-CD set. Except the cover, I think the one I have is the smae to the one you mentioned (Volume 6).
It is still available at Amazon

I just heard the samples provided by allmusic.com, I haven’t heard their version before though theirs had entered the charts during the 60’s. Their version was quite 迷幻, but Zombies’ was pop style. Compare with Zombies and Menace, I like Menace’s version more.

The Menace給我的感覺相當特別。一方面有一種很乖很斯文的感覺，另一方面他們會玩一些比較前衛的歌。例如大碟竟然有The Doors的歌Hello I Love You。很難想像在香港60年代有樂隊唱The Doors的歌，而且是The Menace唱的(如果是Teddy Robin或者Anders Nelson唱The Doors的歌我反而覺得沒有那麼出奇)。
他們的Strawberry Sundae是我很喜歡的歌，歌詞很有趣。

看您們聊到People的"I Love You"，不禁想起當年(1968)台灣一些電台DJ，利用暑假辦了一場西洋熱門樂團比賽。由於當時本地政府對娛樂稅課的稅率較高，他們就想出了買唱片送門票以規避稅則的方法(唱片價格自然就比較高)，並將唱片中的曲目列為比賽指定曲，而其中就包含了有這首"I Love You"。
記得有兩個合唱團都唱這首指定曲，而印象裡其中一團還唱得不錯說。哈，個人一點回憶，多嘴了。
可惜這張特製的唱片封套破損已丟棄，也沒好好的保管生霉了。

The song “I love you” makes me talk about the Zombies again. I am wondering you guys did watch a show by Much More Music early this month hosted by Paul Shaffer, who leads the house band for the “Late Show with David Letterman”.
The show was named “Paul Shaffer and His British Invasion: A Tribute to Mike Smith”. In paying tribute to paralyzed former Dave Clark Five singer Mike Smith, Paul Shaffer hosted a tribute concert on 2 August 2006 at the B.B. King Blues Club in New York featuring an all-star cast including The Zombies, Billy J. Kramer, and Peter and Gordon. Colin Blunstone still has a great way of vocal communication singing “I love you”, “Tell her no”, “She’s not there” … etc beautifully, like no other. Rod Argent is still strong as ever. They are really great musicians with skill and energy on stage. A DVD of the show has been produced and will soon be released.

那幾首Menace 的歌曲全是原來的錄音版本。在那年代，本地的唱片公司一般是不會把曾灌錄的歌曲重錄。Sam Hui許冠傑翻唱Timi Yuro的Interlude可能是個例外，但都是因那歌首個版本是由麗風Life灌錄，其後他重投寶麗金，才作重新灌錄。且這兩版本的配樂安排是完全不同的。我想"Say Hello To Yesterday"這張LP是唱片公司的商業決定，把Menance的歌曲和Joe Chan個人所曾灌唱其它的歌曲併合一起來出版。

其實陳任在EMI的日子中，也有為他們灌錄歌曲的。我有的一張EMI在1975年出版的雜錦LP"Hit Sounds"，就有收錄了Joe Chen灌唱的"How Can I Tell Her?"。但這歌曲並不是Lobo唱的那首，只是同名而已。

聽到消息﹐陳任今天病逝了﹐令人惋惜。
陳任生前的訪問談及早期DJ生涯﹕
