多年前讀過一位樂評人把 Garbage 及 No Doubt 作比較的樂評﹐雖然他的觀點﹐自己不太認同﹐但自此每談起 Garbage 都會不其然想起 No Doubt 來。

No Doubt 本由 Gwen Stefani 和她的哥哥 Eric 及 John Spence 於1987年組成﹐其後因為演出而加入貝斯手Tony Kanal。後來 John 自殺﹐於是便加入結他手 Tom Dumont 及鼓手 Adrian Young﹐形成早期的陣容。1991年獲 Interscope 唱片垂青簽約﹐並且出版首張專輯“No Doubt”﹐可惜他們柔合著80年代流行與Ska 的音樂風格不太適合市場﹐而唱片公司對他們也沒有信心﹐於是他們惟有自資出版Beacon Street Collection ﹐不久 Eric便宣佈離隊。1994年唱片公司恢復對他們的信心﹐於是 No Doubt再次走入灌音室﹐並且於翌年發了第3張專輯Tragic Kingdom。首張單曲 Just A Girl打進 Billboard 流行榜第23位﹐而第2張單曲 Spiderwebs獲得第18位﹐不過成績最驕人的是 Don’t Speak停留在冠軍位置達16星期﹐而且在英國也成冠。

起初筆者對Gwen Stefani並沒有好感﹐只因她的扮相太像 Madonna了﹐不過後來還是因同事的介紹﹐竟然瘋狂喜歡上了 Don’t Speak ﹐本來一向只挑美國版CD的自己﹐竟然也為著 Don’t Speak的Acoustic Version及 Live Version而購賣了新加坡版的Hits From Orange County: The Singles Collection + VCD (1997/Interscope)。

相隔5年後﹐他們出版了第4張專輯 Return Of Saturn (2000/Interscope)﹐不過就像 Garbage一樣﹐筆者沉迷他們上一張專輯太久了﹐雖然依舊有購買他們的新專輯﹐但是就沒有細意欣賞﹐而且不久自己也離開了他們的音樂。
