Next Big Thing 專輯發行3年後﹐Vince Gill 再度發行全新專輯 These Days﹐不過這一套卻是非一般的專輯﹐我說是一套﹐那是因為真是一套啊~。

筆者聽 Vince Gill 的音樂﹐其實沒有怎樣刻意追隨﹐大概只是隔一兩年想起他﹐於是就看看他有沒有新專輯的消息而已﹐不過近年我已少買了CD﹐所以網購的習慣也隨之而少了﹐所以更少留意他。後來在一次在逛HMV時﹐無意之間看到 他的These Days。取來一看﹐發現怎麼會是一個Boxset 呢﹐但歌曲又好像很陌生﹐後來還是先回家在網上翻查一下資料﹐才知道那是全新專輯。怎麼﹖一套4張CD的全新專輯﹖不錯﹐是一套4張CD﹐共43首新歌的全新專輯。

因為這一次HMV的價錢是挺相宜的﹐於是就沒有使用網購的方法了。事實上﹐這套專輯已在美國發行了一陣子了﹐只是我沒有留意﹐而本地唱片行也只少量進口而已﹐畢竟 Country Music 在香港市場不大﹐所以這套Boxset 是美國進口的﹐正合我心意。

其實筆者一直頗欣賞不按理出牌的行動﹐記得1991年Guns N' Roses 連發兩炮﹐同時推出Use Your Illusion I & II 專輯﹐令我吃驚之餘﹐也很佩服﹐而且兩張專輯的歌曲都極具水準﹐絕不是單純抓錢之作﹐也令人聽得過癮。所以這一次 Vince Gill 出版一套4張CD﹐也是同樣令我好奇。當然他的音樂水準不會差到那裡去﹐不過一次過推出4張﹐不是有點冒險嗎﹖好~ 你夠膽子發片﹐我也樂意支持支持。

過往Vince Gill 的專輯很少有甚麼文案﹐ 大概就是歌詞﹑製作人員名單﹐或加幾張照片而已﹐但是這一次呢﹐卻是一本小小的書。除了以上一大堆必然的內容之外﹐同時也有文字案解釋為何會有此舉。原來這套專輯由2005開始錄音﹐沒有限定的日期要完成﹐大概就是 Vince Gill 請來可信任或欣賞的樂手來合作﹐若對方有期就相約到錄音室去就是了﹐而歌曲方面﹐便是計劃錄下一堆歌曲﹐再從中選來10首﹑12首輯錄為新專輯﹐風格也大概是幾首Country﹑幾首Blueglass 或將首抒情歌曲之類。批歌曲都是由樂手們來到錄音室中自由發揮﹐甚至當中在需要時商量把原曲改動﹐然而不知不覺間就錄下了30多首歌曲。

就是這樣﹐從30幾首歌曲﹐既愛這一首﹐又喜歡這一首﹐實在很難取捨。另外﹐Vince Gill 也從 Beatles 取得靈感﹐他們不是曾密集的在一年之內連續發片嗎﹖他也大可幾個月發一張專輯啊。另外 Willie Nelson 也曾構思過連發4片﹐就是一張Bluegrass﹑一張 Country﹑一張 Contemporary 及一張 Instrumental﹐可是他沒有得到唱片公司支持﹐最終這計劃胎死腹中。後來 Vince Gill 跟環球唱片高層商量﹐竟然得到支持﹐因為他擁有一班基本粉絲﹐即是說多發幾張﹐唱片公司也就多賺幾筆了。可是到底先出那一張呢﹖後來唱片公司竟然反提議﹐何不再多錄一批歌曲﹐然後把歌曲分類﹐成為4張CD﹐再以一套Boxset 的形式來發售。這大膽的反建議﹐也得到 Vince Gill 的認同﹐於是再進錄音室錄下一批歌曲﹐就成為了現在的 These Days 了。聽起來這個構思實在頗為瘋狂的。

此套專輯分為 Rocking﹑Groovy﹑Country and Western 及Acoustic﹐既可說風格多樣化﹐卻又可很統一。有些歌曲還是特為某些特定的嘉賓而寫的﹐參與的星級樂手/歌手包括 Gretchen Wilson﹑Rodney Crowell﹑Del McCoury Band﹑Michael McDonald﹑Bekka Bramlett﹑LeAnn Rimes﹑Alison Krauss﹑Bonnie Raitt﹑Sheryl Crow﹑Diana Krall﹑Jenny Gill﹑Trisha Yearwood﹑Amy Grant﹑Katrina Elam﹑Patty Loveless﹑Dan Tyminski﹑Emmylou Harris﹑Phil Everly﹑Lee Ann Womack﹑John Anderson﹑Rebecca Lynn Howard﹑Guy Clark 等﹐當中也有頗多筆者熟識的名字。這套專輯發行了3張單曲﹐只有兩張打上Billboard 鄉謠排行榜而已﹐然而在這套專輯得到2007年兩個Grammy 獎項﹐包括Best Country Album 以及歌曲Reason Why 為 Vince Gill 取得 Best Male Country Vocal Performance。
