“The Italian” (Italianetz) is a heart wrenching movie from Russia.
A boy in an orphanage ,played by Kolya Spiridonov, is about to be adopted by an Italian couple but has tried his best to find his birthmother. It’s astonishing that he is so determined to track down her mother that he never thinks of giving up considering all the pains and miseries he has suffered along the way. His courageous act is definitely the key to this movie’s success.
Still, “The Italian” is more than a movie about the boy’s adventures of “fighting” his mother back. The director and writer, Andrei Kravchuk, deals with Russian social issues with a sophisticated style. He could have showed the adoption agents’ “absolute evil” brutally, but he let the humanity shine even under difficult circumstances.
In contrast to its harsh and cold setting, “The Italian” is such a touching movie that radiates warmth.
