百年老茶

福爾摩沙茶在十九世紀中期開始由英國人Jonh Dodd 推廣，1869年不經廈門直接出口到美國紐約，從此福爾摩沙茶的聲譽傳遍世界。

這是大鼻子在ebay上標到的百年老茶。紙盒裝，盒子沒有被打開過的跡象，拿起來搖有東西在裡面沙沙的聲音。據古董商賣家的說法，是沒有開過的真品。

盒子上的公司名，波士頓的 Delano Potter Co.，我們在網路上只有找到一份1890年代報稅的紀錄。進一步用兩個姓找資料的結果，我們猜測Delano應該與Franklin Delano Roosevelt 小羅斯福總統的母親的父親Warren Delano II有關。他在1846年由中國返回紐約，靠著在中國的經商致富。1860年他生意受損，又跑回香港打拼。南北戰爭時期，他靠運送鴨片給美國戰爭部醫療部門(Medical Bureau of the U.S. War Department)大發國難財。 另外一個姓Potter,可能與William James Potter 有關。他於1829年初生在麻塞諸塞州達特茅茲，積極參與政治，也是Unitarian自由教派的傳教士。他的夫人的母親出身Delano家族，夫人的舅舅靠船運賺了很多錢。Warren Delano II 就是他們的表親。

我很好奇盒子裡面是不是真的百年福爾摩沙老茶，可惜大鼻子說不能打開，會破壞價值。不過他又說，搞不好一打開發現是盒百年老鴉片.......

Tea的英美語發音是Tee，過了很多手了，大概是某個編英文字典的笨蛋亂定義的。

很多錯誤、莫名其妙的發音都是字典編者自己決定的，北京話字典亦然。

其實歐洲除了英語以外的其他語言，Tea這個字反而跟泉洲話、廈門語、台語的「茶」發音相同。

其實我也在懷疑 oolong 這個字可能最早不是英文。歐洲人比美國人還早喝亞洲東方的茶

編字典的不一定是笨蛋啦，只是依照他們所知的發音規則或記錄講那個語言的人如何發這個音。

茶的英文，我想應該是歐洲語言傳過去的，直覺就想到法文的茶是 the ，發音跟台語的「茶」非常接近，我去查了線上語源字典，果然是（Amoy 廈門話）：

Meaning "afternoon meal at which tea is served" is from 1738. Slang meaning "marijuana" (which sometimes was brewed in hot water) is attested from 1935, felt as obsolete by late 1960s. Tea bag first recorded 1940; tea ball is from 1895.

Republic of Tea 的 Moroccan Mint Tea 採用的就是Formosan Tea 呦~
