It's really amazing to know what Google Site can do!

Here I keep some instructions for myself, in case I forget something in the future, I can "remember" something from this article.

Pages that we can use

1. Web Page (plain page)
When writing on a web page, all objects can be inserted into this page like a "text box", a "photo" or even gadgets.
Remember when you use H2~H4 heading for some titles or subtitles, you can use "Table of contents" from "Insert" menu.

2. Dashboard


A dashboard is a summary page for kinds of gadgets, if you want to collect information with gadgets and want to put all of them on one page, then dashboard is the answer.

3. Announcements


"Announcements" is a special page type that used for "announcement " or "update". After you put an announcement page, you got a "New post" button, it generates a new web page once you click this button. Besides, the brief summary of this web page can be retrieved from "Recent posts" from "Insert" menu. A summary page of all announcements is available, different from gadget mentioned above, it shows "the whole announcement" but not a brief on this page. It's generated automatically.

4. File Cabinet


File cabinet is a file center page, you can upload files to this page, these files can be sorted in the single pages no matter how many files you have. The "revision" control is very poor here, you can not control the number manually, it changes by unknown rule...

5. List


This is a page designed to make a list, different from normal list (table) in plain page, the width of a list is full range, it means it will always span to the right and left side of the page, no matter how many columns you have. There is a simple I/F to establish a list, and several default lists are available, you may create a whole new one, or modify from existing lists. The out look is somewhat different from normal table, but it saves the time and effort to carve the table to fit your need.

6. Start Page (new!)


Actually I have no idea what is the difference between this page and a plain page stuffed with gadgets. Anyway I like to use a plain page to act as a top page for my sites.

What can be inserted into a page ("Insert" function)

It's clear about the meaning of "inserting an image", you can upload an image file from your local PC or put a link in the dialog, then the image emerges on the page.

2. Link
A link establishes a bridge from one page to another, the destination page can be one page in your site or just on the Internet.

3. Table of contents
Remember to use H2~H4 heading, and a "table of contents" could be generated automatically. You can select "wrap on/off" to adjust the position of this table.

4. Subpage listing
A list of subpage, nothing more and nothing less.

5. Horizontal line
To separate several components on your page. Always keep an eye on the line while you want to delete it. Make sure what you had deleted, the line, or the content you wanted to keep below.

6. Calendar
You can insert a calendar on a page, all calendar you are shared under your domain show on the list and you can select one of them. You can even a calendar link once it's shared even it's not under your domain, too. Several settings are available for this calendar: height, width, view and others:

6.1 Height
The height of the calendar, never set this number to large, it makes some trouble when the number is too large because you need to scroll up and down.
6.2 Width
The width of this calendar, 100% when empty. You may set the width through this setting or through the "layout" of the page, it's recommended by me since the width goes wrong when you have different resolution if you set it to be a fix number. You may set the "layout" to be 2 columns or 3, and make it 100% width of that column.
6.3 View
It sets up the way the calendar shows, "Week", "Month" and "Agenda" are available.
6.4 Show week, month, and agenda tabs

If you check this item, a tab that can be selected among "Month", "Week" and "Agenda" shows on upper right corner.
6.5 Show calendar name
If you check this item, the name (in the Google calendar or on the web by link) will show above the calendar, always remember that you can not modify the name by checking this item, and it's not necessary to check this and also check 6.9 item at the same time.
6.6 Show navigation buttons

If this item is checked, a "left and right" button shows on upper left corner, user may select the day or month he want by this button.
6.7 Show current date range

This function shows a button on the upper left corner, when click the button, a small calendar pops up and you may select month or day you want quickly.
6.8 Include border around Google calendar
This draws a border around the calendar area, but you can not set the size and color of the border.
6.9 Include title
It's similar with 6.5 "show calendar name", the only difference is you can edit or set the title of the calendar, on the contrary, show calendar name just shows the name, you can not edit or set the name. Next session will complete all functions in Google Sites.
