THE BEAUTIFUL ISLAND

I came from the dreamtime from the fertile mountain plains;

I am the ancient heart, the keeper of this land;

I stood upon jagged moutains;

I swam along striking shorelines;

For thousands of years I was the first Fomosan.

I came upon the boat looking for freedom;

I was a settler, looking for a new beginning;

I crossed the strait and found that treasured land;

I endured the pain, toiled the land and pleaded for the rains;

A prisoner within then a free man I became.

I am the sons and daughters of the old world;

I am the child of the depression, distressed from famine and war;

I crossed the sea looking for solace;

I left the place ravaged by turmoil, travelled the long and winding road;

Arrived a land of peace and tranquility that I once thought never existed.

We are diverse, but we are one;

We come from all parts of this good earth;

We might have differences, but our minds think alike;

We shared the same moments, our voice sang as one;

We are all children of this beautiful island, Formosa.
