(The Spousals of God)

as bodas de deus

joao de deus

João de Deus

God’s Messenger:
I’m a messenger from God.

João de Deus: Am I going to be called up?

God’s Messenger: I have not received any instructions to that effect.

You are too old.

João de Deus: I will turn to dust, but loving dust.

God’s Messenger: I was sent to give you this case.

It contains an incredible amount of money.

João de Deus: How much?

God’s Messenger: Don’t fret over the details. You are fabulously rich.

You can buy what your heart desires.

João de Deus: I can give in to every whim?

God’s Messenger: The most extravagant.

João de Deus: Bring down governments?

God’s Messenger: From now on, you are the most powerful man on earth.

You don’t have to answer to anyone.

João de Deus: I don’t’ even have to light up a candle in honour of my benefactor?

God’s Messenger: Not at all.

Y
ou are not obliged to perform any kind of thanksgiving.

João de Deus: In that case, I think I am capable of keeping the case.

Is the loo in dollars?

God’s Messenger: You can change it into marks. It won’t fluctuate so much.

João de Deus: That’s what I was thinking.

João de Deus: I’ve come to leave this child to the care of the nuns.

Mother Superior: Praise be to God.

João de Deus: Give her chicken broth and a lot of rest.

Mother Superior: Sisters, let us give thanks to god and to the saviour

      of this unfortunate child. In the implacable and selfish

      world in which we live, those who still care about

      the suffering of their equals are rare, risking their own lives.

João de Deus: No pneumonia gets to me

Mother Superior: What is your name, my good mans?

João de Deus: João de Deus (John of God).

Mother Superior: A holy name. Are you a believer?

João de Deus: It's not a question of belief, it's a question of trust. God is obscure.

Mother Superior: Thanks to your good deed the angels and

      the seraphins rejoice in the Kingdom of Heaven.

João de Deus: Mother, don't turn a little aquatic impulse into a celestial orgy.

Mother Superior: Here, take a hundred escudos.

But don't spend it all in wine.

João de Deus: God bless you, Mother Superior, for this holy alms.

Mother Superior: May God go with you.

João de Deus: Rather alone than in bad company. Agostinho,

     here's a hundred dollars, but don't spend it all on nuns.

Agostinho: Thank you, my good man.

princess

Come and Go
