Project H=L - I love to hate, and hate to love [23 Apr 2006]
愛臺北,就要從恨她開始
Taking pictures of the places I live is the way I express my love for it (which passion, I admit, I owed a whole lot to Andy). I take pictures of blooming flowers, old buildings, funny signs and great mountain views, because they are nice, cool and I think can show the best of Taipei City, the place I'm 100% proud to be in.I spend nearly 2 hours everyday on my small but indestructible scooter everyday, and the more I pay attention to what the streets have to offer me visually, the more I am aware that the ugly parts in Taipei are worthy of some attention. Before long, we have got used to things that are not supposed to be pleasant: sidewalks under repair, roofs made of rotten cupboards, litter in front of a post office, names carved on tree trunks, dog poop at the entrance of a subway, broken bikes locked by the canal...(the last one belongs to the NL, actually).
I hereby propose to initiate a project H=L (Hate is Love) in which I will photograph the parts I consider ugly (that is, aesthetically challenged, emotionally disturbing or cruelly ignored). The targets won't be obvious and identifiable, because detail is what I want to go into. While the prevailing anonymity signifies the universal nature of the problems inflicting this city and its people, each case will be an epitome of an overwhelming issue.
No more perfect, photogenic long shots of Taipei 101s, Chai Kai-Shek Memorial Halls and Long-Shan Temples. My unfurnished photos will reveal in full strength the ugliness of Taipei, and this will be exactly the way I adopt: I love to hate (it, because) I hate (in order) to love.
