a love story? think again!

Name a few love stories that I know: Romeo and Juliet, 梁山伯與祝英台, Tristan and Isolde, Porgy and Bess, Beauty and the Beast, Tom and Jerry... (oops, the last one isn't really a love story, is it?) What do these stories have in common? Is it that they more often than not have tragic endings? Maybe so, but I would like to point out that the titles are all spoilers.

Porgy and Bess        We get so used to knowing WHO exactly will fall in love in the stories, if it's not right in the beginning, then it must happen half way into the story, otherwise it would certainly take place at the end, whose postponed climax only gives the audience more satisfaction at seeing the destined couple finally reconciled, or, technically speaking, fulfilled their mission.

The process of watching a play production of Romeo and Juliet is thus only a re-experiencing of the calamities inflicted upon this unfortunate duo, rather than a refreshing viewing of a new story. Because we have known the plot so well, neither the director nor the actors would trouble to hide the fact that R and J are falling in love. The familiarity of the audience with the story has robbed away our simple pleasure of being SURPRISED. (Please note I'm not saying reproducing popular love stories is pointless, given that I enjoy shedding tears while watching 梁山伯與祝英台.)

Somehow I hope to see a love story that doesn't tell me in advance who will fall in love, and what would happen to them. I will go into the theater totally unaware of the story plot and who plays who, just watch the story unfolds itself. Though I doubt this experimental kind of production will bring in enough audience to support itself financially.                                                                                               7 Mar 2006
