Warriors mum amid Artest trade rumors
THE SPECULATION HAS INCLUDED MURPHY, DUNLEAVY, PIETRUS, DIOGU
By Marcus Thompson II
Knight Ridder

Word is, the only thing holding up the Warriors' trading for beleaguered
Indiana Pacers All-Star forward Ron Artest is tonight's game.

See, the Pacers don't want to trade Artest and then have to face him right
away, so they're waiting until after tonight's game. This way, Indiana
wouldn't have to deal with Artest until Feb. 10, when the Warriors play at
Conseco Fieldhouse.

Sounds convincing, right?

``Whatever,'' Warriors guard Jason Richardson said with a smirk. ``I don't
listen to no rumors.''

Whether through rumors or media reports, the Warriors consistently have been
mentioned as being among the teams -- along with the Los Angeles Lakers,
Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets -- pursuing a trade for Artest, who
wore out his welcome in Indiana last month by asking to be traded.

Neither Warriors executive Chris Mullin nor General Manager Rod Higgins would
comment. It is team policy not to discuss trade speculation or players on
other teams. But there is reason to believe there might be some truth to the
rumors.

Sources from other teams are leaking information to the media that the
Warriors are involved. Plus, Higgins and Mullin stayed in Oakland during the
recent trip. At least one of them usually accompanies the team on the road.

Mullin

Speculation involving the Warriors has included power forward Troy Murphy,
small forward Mike Dunleavy, swingman Mickael Pietrus and rookie Ike Diogu.

The new collective bargaining agreement makes Dunleavy hard to deal. The
five-year, $44 million extension he signed before the season takes effect
next season, but it increases the dollar figure assigned to Dunleavy from
$4.5 million to about $8 million for any team that trades for him this year.
Hence, trading Dunleavy would almost assuredly require a third team with
salary-cap space.

The same holds true for Murphy, but for a different reason. He's hard to move
because he's considered a base year compensation player. According to the
collective bargaining agreement, when a team over the salary cap gives its
player a raise of 12 percent or more, as the Warriors did Murphy before last
season, that team can get back only half the player's contract value in a
trade for the first year. So, though Murphy is making $7.36 million this
season, the Warriors could get back only $3.68 million.

``I haven't spoken with anyone from Golden State,'' Artest's agent, Mark
Stevens, said. ``Whoever wants him, that's where he'll go. If Golden State
wants him, he'll be happy to play with Golden State. I don't think it would
be a problem fitting in there.''

Pacers President Larry Bird said he'd prefer to trade Artest to a Western
Conference team, the Indianapolis Star reported.

``Any time you deal a player, you would like him to go out of the
conference,'' Bird told the Star. ``We're looking at the West, but if it's
the East, that's how it's going to be. Whether we get a draft choice or a
player, we're going to make sure it's the right deal. We've done enough to
back Ronnie.''

Foster
but..

Pacers agree: Artest must go
All-Star forward is put on inactive list while CEO Walsh explores trading him

By Mike Wells
mike.wells@indystar.com

The Indiana Pacers will grant Ron Artest's wish and look to trade the NBA
All-Star forward, CEO Donnie Walsh said Monday.

"I think Ronnie came out with something that made a lot of sense to me, and
that is he's always living down his past in this franchise," Walsh said. "I
do think it's time to break apart and get a new start somewhere else."

Artest told The Star on Saturday that his past haunts him here, he dislikes
playing for coach Rick Carlisle and he can't reach his potential with the
team.

Walsh said he considered retaining Artest after learning about his request on
Saturday, but once Artest repeated his desire to play elsewhere over the
weekend, Walsh "changed my thoughts on that."

The Pacers put Artest on the inactive list for at least the next three games
and took an extra step: He can't practice or travel with the team.

"We're in second place in our conference, yet all the headlines are about,
'Ron Artest wants to be traded,' " Walsh said. "I don't think the team needs
that type of distraction."

」Walsh

The Pacers practiced Monday -- minus Artest -- and were in no mood to talk
about him.

"I'm not going to answer any more questions about Ron Artest," forward
Jermaine O'Neal said. "Ron doesn't want to be here, so Ron doesn't matter
anymore."

If Artest Wants Trade, He Hasn’t Told Walsh

By Conrad Brunner | Dec. 10, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If Ron Artest does indeed want to be traded, he hasn't told the right
people.

The report of Artest's unhappiness originated from a TNT telecast Friday
night and emanated through other media outlets around the country, but
franchise CEO and President Donnie Walsh Saturday night he has not heard it
from Artest himself.

"Ronnie has never said anything like this to me," Walsh said before the
Pacers beat Memphis 80-66 in Conseco Fieldhouse. "All the other questions are
franchise questions and they'll be answered by the franchise."

Walsh said he planned no meeting with Artest, though he said his door was
open if the apparently unhappy player wants to express his feelings.

"I think it would be in his interest to meet with me if that's what he wants
to see happen," Walsh said. "To make a public announcement is not the way to
go about it. We've been very respectful of Ronnie, very supportive and if he
felt this way I would've felt better if he had come to me personally and sat
down and talked to me."

Artest sat out his second consecutive game with lingering pain in his right
wrist. He originally was injured when fouled hard by Cleveland's LeBron James
on Thanksgiving and sat out the next game. After playing six more, he
aggravated the injury earlier this week against Dallas. He told the
Indianapolis Star he expected to miss at least five games but the Pacers have
not confirmed that prognosis, describing his status as day-to-day.

Artest was not available for comment.

Coach Rick Carlisle said he was not aware that any trade request had been
made.

"That's not my department," he said. "It's not something I'm going to talk
about, and I don't have any knowledge of it other than hearing some rumors
about it."

Artest was not available for comment.

Coach Rick Carlisle said he was not aware that any trade request had been
made.

"That's not my department," he said. "It's not something I'm going to talk
about, and I don't have any knowledge of it other than hearing some rumors
about it."

Injuries hinder O'Neal, Tinsley

By Mike Wells
mike.wells@indystar.com

O'Neal

O'Neal

Pollard

。後來他改變了想法，在他決定"live a little bit for a couple of days."

Etc.

Jamaal Tinsley
(最後一段翻的怪怪的地方 every team, especially one searching for its first

Coming here and laying an egg took away (from the two road wins)<-

Jackson

Johnson's legal case is 1st up for Pacers
By Mike Wells

Anthony Johnson, one of five Indiana Pacers charged with misdemeanor assault and battery after the Nov. 19 brawl with fans during a game against the Detroit Pistons, is expected in district court in Rochester Hills, Mich., today for jury selection.

Johnson's trial is expected to start next week.

Johnson

Jermaine O'Neal, Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson also are charged and will have pretrial hearings Sept. 23. A fifth Pacer, David Harrison, had his pretrial moved from Monday to early October, attorney Walter Piszczatowski said. Piszczatowski said Thursday that he hopes to have the pretrial hearing done before the Pacers open training camp Oct. 4.

Artest, O'Neal and Jackson will go before Judge Julie Nicholson on Sept. 23. Formal charges are given, a plea can be entered and trial dates could be set during the pretrial.

The players may plead guilty, but that's unlikely because admitting guilt could be used in a civil lawsuit.

The penalty for each case is 93 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.

The brawl started when Artest went into the stands after a fan threw a beer cup on him at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

			Conditional deal for Henderson
Associated Press

http://tinyurl.com/8aqpy

NEW YORK -- A charge against NBA forward Alan Henderson for allegedly taking an unlicensed gun to a New York airport was conditionally dropped Monday.

The weapon case will be adjourned for six months "in contemplation of dismissal," Queens district attorney's office spokeswoman Meris Campbell said.

If Henderson commits no offenses, the charge will be dismissed. He also will have to pay a $500 fine and work 10 days of community service, Campbell said.

Henderson, a 10-year veteran from Indiana University, was arrested July 2 when he allegedly took a gun that was not licensed in New York to the John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Henderson, 32, played last season with the Dallas Mavericks, averaging 3.5 points per game.

His lawyer, Xavier Donaldson, did not immediately return telephone calls for comment Monday. His agent, Bill Strickland, could not be reached.

NBA stars lift spirits of Katrina evacuees

NBA stars lift spirits of Katrina evacuees

Associated Press
http://tinyurl.com/exgfp

HOUSTON -- Chris LaRoche doesn't have any clothes, toys or a place to go home to, but on Sunday the 12-year-old's dream came true when he played basketball against Cleveland's LeBron James, Minnesota's Kevin Garnett, Detroit's Chauncey Billups, Indiana's Ron Artest and a host of other NBA stars.

LaRoche and about 1,100 other Hurricane Katrina evacuees living in Houston's George R. Brown Convention Center got a morning visit from about a dozen NBA players in town for an evening charity game.

"I can't believe it," LaRoche said, a huge grin on his face. "I was guarding LeBron. It was so crazy."

James and the other players spent about 90 minutes playing with kids, signing autographs and greeting fans.

"Hopefully we can put some smiles on their faces and maybe for just that little moment they cannot think about what happened," James said.

TNT basketball analyst Kenny Smith organized the game, played at the Toyota Center before a packed crowd that included at least 5,000 evacuees who were given tickets. Smith said each of the almost 30 players participating in the event donated a minimum of $10,000 in money or supplies to the relief effort.

Other players participating in or attending the game included Houston's Tracy McGrady, Miami's Dwyane Wade, Houston's Steve Francis, Denver's Carmelo Anthony and Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal. The West won the game 114-95.

Pacers' Bender leads drive for relief
                                                                                                     By Mike Wells

Basketball can wait. Survivors of Hurricane Katrina can't.

That was Jonathan Bender's message Wednesday as the Indiana Pacers forward helped load trucks with supplies to take to his hometown of Picayune, Miss.

"This has basically been my life since it happened," said Bender, who thanked people as they dropped off supplies at Greenwood Park Mall, Lafayette Square Mall and Conseco Fieldhouse. "I was looking at my hometown and hearing people talk about how bad it is down there. I can't let people suffer down there. I dribbled the ball in those neighborhoods growing up. I had to do something and put responsibility on my back and take charge."

Members of the Pacers' organization, along with Bender's sister, Valerie McDowell, and his chef, Derrick Franklin, helped load trucks. Donors received free tickets to tonight's Indiana Fever playoff game. Supplies such as water and diapers can be dropped off at the three locations through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Bender has rented six, two-bedroom apartments in Indianapolis for about 20 family members.

"Everybody is calling me and telling me they don't have a home," he said. "Everybody has nothing. When your money runs out at the hotel, you're stuck. What do you do? You call the friend you have. I have to help these people."

Bender plans to go to Mississippi and New Orleans to check on his offseason home before going to Houston to work with his personal trainer in preparation for training camp, which opens in early October.

"(This) made me have another outlook on life," he said. "I don't take a lot of things for granted, like ice and water."
