Nintendo Again Fails Against Greenpeace's Environmental Standards
According to the eleventh edition of Greenpeace's Guide to Greener Electronics , Nintendo hasn't made much improvement in their environmental track record. The company came in with a 0.8 score (on a scale of 0 to 10), with Microsoft getting a 2.7, and Sony leading the way with a 5.5.
Nintendo's 0.8 score is a marginal improvement on the dead-zero score they received back in 2007, but it keeps them squarely in last place. "The company has banned phthalates and is monitoring use of antimony and beryllium and although it is endeavoring to eliminate the use of PVC, it has not set a timeline for its phase out," the report explains. "Nintendo discloses carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from its own operations and commits to cutting CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases by 2% over each previous year. However, Nintendo admits that an increase in business led to a 6% rise in CO2 emissions in 2006."

But the biggest problem for Nintendo, as it was before, is that they don't provide enough information on the various categories Greenpeace rates each company on. Seven out of the eleven categories in which Nintendo received a 0 were based on either too little info, or no info at all.
Microsoft's score dropped year-to-year, "for failing to clarify how its recycling data is calculated," the report says. Sony's score, though, actually moved up this year, gaining points for "the energy efficiency of its products by reporting that all new models of TVs released in 2008 meet the latest ES requirements, and 45% of new models of 'VAIO' PCs launched July 2007 to November 2008 meet the ES requirements for PC."
