A Letter to Taipei City Mayor-My view about public safety

Dear Mr. Mayor Hau Lung-bin,

I am only a small civilian in the big city. I’ve just read the news about the boom of a crane that plunged 37 floors from a construction project in Xinyi District and smashed the back end of a tour bus carrying 25 visitors from China, killing 2 passengers and injuring another on April 24. I am shocked and feel sorry about this tragedy. However, I think it’s not just operator negligence but also a problem about how the citizens in Taiwan lack a sense of public safety and social morality. I write this letter to give you my opinions and suggestions to improve public safety in our city.

When I walk on the street, I often see some terrifying scenes: a bus stop under construction, full of sand and sharp things without a sign or an encircling security line. Some drivers rush by, and they neither obey the traffic lights nor care about pedestrians. How dangerous they are! The above-mentioned incidents and others like them are happening every day and on every corner in this city. Those conditions are proof that we citizens have a rather careless attitude and underestimate the possibility of danger even though we consider our city to be developed. Who can say that the falling of a crane will not occur again?

I strongly suggest that the government take some actions about public safety. Firstly, the government should enforce the regulations of public safety. Secondly, the government should increase awareness of public safety by means of advertisements or a citizen education system. Finally, citizens must be required to know the high price that is paid for overlooking public safety.

Please show us citizens your competence and power this time. We never want that kind of accident to happen again!

Best regards,
Josephine
