A Letter to Taipei City Mayor-My view about public safety

Dear Mr. Mayor Hau Lung-bin,

I am only a small civilian in the big city. I’ve just read the news about the boom of a crane that plunged 37 floors from a construction project in Xinyi District and smashed the back end of a tour bus carrying 25 visitors from China, killing 2 passengers and injuring another on April 24. I am shocked and feel sorry about this tragedy. However, I think it’s not just operator negligence but also a problem about how the citizens in Taiwan lack a sense of public safety and social morality. I write this letter to give you my opinions and suggestions to improve public safety in our city.

One Taiwanese Cultural Milestone

There are some important life events in each society, and Taiwan is no exception. The rite of passage that has become so popular recently for Taiwanese youngsters is traveling around the island, and they see the process as an important step towards growing up.

In 2007 a movie entitled Island Etude was in Taiwanese theaters. The story followed a young man, Ming-hsiang, as he traveled around Taiwan on his bike. He biked to the most beautiful scenery in Taiwan, and from the journey he experienced something he never had before. There is a famous saying from that movie, “If you don’t do something now, you’ll never have the chance to do it in your life.” That movie touched so many young people in Taiwan, and it brought a trend of traveling around the island. Most of the youngsters ride bikes on their journey, as the main character did at the movie.

Customs in Taiwan

Customs are usually considered a way of life or the culture that a particular group has followed for a long time. As a nearly 30-year-old Taiwanese, I am rightly familiar with the customs in Taiwan. I’d like to introduce some interesting ones below.

Firstly, you cannot help but refer to food in Taiwan because Taiwanese like to eat, and diet accounts for an important part of Taiwanese life. From childhood on during a meal, children are admonished by their mothers not to waste a grain of rice, or they will marry someone with a pockmarked face in the future. As a greeting, people use the sentence “Have you eaten?” which has the same meaning as “How do you do?” Moreover, no matter at school or work, Taiwanese always like to be seated at a table in order to talk and build up relationships with one another.

Why 'CAPE NO.7' catches so many eyes?

Before last Saturday I went to see a movie “Cape NO.7” with my friend Melody, who we have known each other nearly ten years. I have to admit that at first I went to see the “Cape NO.7” just because I am curious about why the Taiwanese movie can get so popular and so hit, in either word of mouth or the box office. However, after I walked out of the movie theater, I realized why it could capture so many audiences’ eyes and touch their hearts. Here I would like to give some of my opinions of the movie as below.
