無處歸途 —— 傑飛的部落格

cover 版最大的問題是，怎麼在「喚醒歌迷對原曲的記憶」及「演繹出另一種不同的風格」之間取得平衡點；在網誌上說說容易，然而 I'm Not There OST 裡每一首歌對迪倫迷來說，形象多半都固定了，你要怎麼說服歌迷接受沒有電吉他摧枯拉朽般聲響的 All Along The Watchtower、沒有一堆 percussion 的 Stuck Inside of Mobile、以及用鋼琴作為主伴奏的 Knocking on Heaven's Door？I'm Not There OST 作為一張 covers 大合集，「折衷求全」的任務也就格外艱鉅。

聽完這張專輯後，我覺得 I'm Not There 實在很難以「一張專輯」的角度來評價，因為每首歌的個性都太強烈，有六０年代踩在時代浪潮下的抗議歌曲、有隱居 woodstock 後的鄉間情趣、有中年男子抑鬱的情緒、也有六十歲老人的滄桑智慧，每一首歌都反映了一個時代、也反映了歌手當時的 state of mind，用任何概括性的文字來評述，都失之偏頗，所以只能一首一首談。

第一首想提的是 Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll。這首歌講述 William Zanzinger 殺死 Hattie Carroll，卻只被判刑半年的故事；從「you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears, Take the rag away from your face. Now ain't the time for your tears」到「Bury the rag deep in your face For now's the time for your tears」可以知道曲中憤怒的情緒非常強烈，尖銳的 finger-pointing 態度似乎可以刺穿世上所有的偽善，然而 Mason Jennings 版的 Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll，卻把所有的情緒全部抽掉，把它當另一首 ballad 來唱，這種 rendition 我無法接受。

All Along The Watchtower，這首歌需要敘述嗎？不要鬧了，他們是 Eddie Vedder & The Million Dollar Bashers耶！除了 Jimi Hendrix 的「原版」（你知道我的意思）及老楊在 30th Anniversary 的版本以外，私以為就以這個版本最棒，無話可說。

Highway 61 Revisited，我不認識歌手，但他／她的聲音應該有 distortion 處理過，很有趣的表現方式，故意微帶鼻音也很能抓到原曲的神韻（where do you want this killing done? Out on highway 61）；原本以為聽過 Johnny Winter 版後，很可能對其他版本都有成見，但 Karen O 版仍然很值得一聽。

Fourth Time Around 非常的優拉糖果…好啦，我知道這樣的描述很爛，但我只能說 Yo La Tango 除了「發揚光大」原曲的三拍子之外（其實原曲四三拍，我是看派站長的文章才知道，YLT版就很明顯），完全把 Fourth Time Around 改編成自己的歌。如果你喜歡 Yo La Tango，你會喜歡這個版本。

我還沒看過電影，不曉得導演在什麼狀況下讓 Moonshiner 成為配樂，但電影加入 Moonshiner 是相當有趣的選擇。這其實是首老民謠，迪倫最初在 Gaslight （北美星巴克買的到的那張）唱過一次，之後在 Times They Are A-Changing 錄音中唱過幾個 take，卻沒有收進去，最後是到官方版的 Bootleg Series Vol.1~3才第一次發行。原曲單純就是歌聲加口琴加吉他，Bob Forrest 版保留了所有元素，但另外加了打擊樂器，也把吉他的曲風稍微偏向 alt-country，個人覺得還不賴。

The Times They Are A-Changing 的問題跟 Hattie Carroll 一樣。其實我是先寫感想，再查翻唱者是誰，剛覺得 The Times 怎麼唱不出「Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway Don't block up the hall」與「Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land And don't criticize What you can't understand」那種橫眉冷對千夫指的氣勢？OK，翻唱者還是Mason Jennings，那就不太意外了。

Stuck Inside of Mobile，整張專輯我最喜歡的歌之一。不完全因為 Cat Power 版跟原唱差別不大，而是因為兩個理由：（一）真的應該起立為 Cat Power 版的 session musician 鼓掌，他們成功複製（雖然放在這裡好像不是什麼稱讚）Blonde on Blonde 錄音的氣氛，讓聽眾好像又回到六六年的 Nashville，旁邊的 Robbie Robertson試圖保持理智，但歌手很可能邊嗑藥邊唱「Now the rainman gave me two cures,
Then he said, "Jump right in." The one was Texas medicine, The other was just railroad gin. An' like a fool I mixed them An' it strangled up my mind, An' now people just get uglier An' I have no sense of time」；Charlyn Marshall 的嗓音也很適合那種「吟唱」（有時候你搞不清楚歌手在念歌還是唱歌）式的曲風。

Pressing On，另一首「基督時期」的歌曲。坦白說，除了 Every Grand of Sand 以外，我從沒真正喜歡 Slow Train Coming、Saved、Shot of Love 裡的任何一首歌，但 John Doe（顯然不是 CSI 那種）把迪倫當時對信仰的熱情很確切地唱了出來，專輯中的佳作之一。

Simple Twist of Fate，另一首我很喜歡的版本。Jeff Tweedy似乎模仿了迪倫在 1975 年上 John Hammond tribute 電視錄影的演出，不僅唱腔類似，小提琴適時的點綴也讓人不禁聯想起 Scarlett Rivera；略帶沙啞的聲音，很符合 Simple Twist of Fate 曲中孤寂的氣氛。
