Greenfields

這是我的第一篇音樂網誌，就由我最喜愛的樂隊 "The Brothers Four" 和我認識的第一首西方民歌《Greenfields》開始吧。

《Greenfields》可算是我在中學時代聽西方民歌的啓蒙歌曲，記得當時躺在牀上，把一盒不知從那裡弄來的卡式帶放進機裏播，跟著就聽到由幾把和諧而雄厚的男聲所唱出的《Greenfields》。雖然是第一次聽這首歌，但已覺得十分悅耳動聽，封面寫著的歌者就是一隊叫 The Brothers Four 的組合，這樣就開始了我對西方民歌的興趣。其後我也開始尋找其他 Brothers Four 的作品，記得當時僅有的十來隻黑膠唱片，差不多全都是屬於Brothers Four 的。後來我與一位同學以二人組合參加學校的歌唱比賽，也是以這首歌曲來參賽的，那次是我第一次參加歌唱比賽。

對這首簡單的歌曲，Brothers Four 亦以樸實的手法來演繹，開首及結尾都用上結他最基礎的T12321 鉤弦法來處理，簡單的伴奏和唱詠也就是傳統民歌的風格。

以下是Brothers Four 近年現場演奏的《Greenfields》，右起是Terry Lauber、Bob Flick、John Paine及Mark Pearson，當中Bob和John是最初創立的原有成員。



《Greenfields》是 Brothers Four 於1960 年為哥倫比亞唱片公司推出的第二張細碟，唱片推出之後，歌曲大受歡迎，此後Brothers Four 更廣為樂迷所認識，名氣緊隨另一隊民歌組合 The Kingston Trio 。不過雖然《Greenfields》 這首歌令他們一炮而紅，他們其實不是這首歌的原唱者。《Greenfields》 是由 Terry Gilkyson 作曲，而Terry Gilkyson 是另一隊三人民歌組合 The Easy Riders 的成員，所以《Greenfields》 的原唱者也就是 The Easy Riders，不過他們的演繹卻未能把這首曲唱紅，到Brothers Fours 手中才發揚光大。
