11/29 Today we woke up at 5:30 again. We keep training on the beach. Practice makes better. I could easily tell the difference between a false crawl and a nest this time. The shape of a nest actually looks like the Chinese grave, but a nest represents new life not death. I am happy to see a nest. It means these almost extinct species have more opportunity to live on our planet.
We also went to another beach for swimming and snorkeling. There are a lot of attractive beaches in Exmouth for us to explore. This time we saw turtles close to the shore. Some of them were big and some were small. It looks like they were also enjoying their leisure time in this beautiful place. Because I woke up very early yesterday and didn’t hit hay after lunch, I decided to enjoy sunbathing on the beach. Damian said he saw a big turtle zoom just next to him when he snorkeled. Turtles don’t seem afraid of humans. I hope I can swim next to the turtle next time.
After we came back from the beach, we went to the liquor shop to grab some beers and wine. We were going to have a BBQ that night. We also went to the supermarket to buy some stuff for the BBQ. When I went into the supermarket I was half- naked because we had just came back from the beach. In the beginning, I felt a little uncomfortable and weird, but Heather told me that local people even bared their feet while they were shopping. Cultures really differ from country to country. If I did the same move in Taiwan, people would consider me as a crazy guy. But I LOVE the Australia culture, it feels move free and unrestricted. I really want to be a local.
The day I arrived in Perth, I stood outside the airport whilst I was waiting for the bus to the hostel. I looked at the stars and thought about what life would have become if I’d immigrated to Perth when I was little. What kind of person would I have become? What kind of life would I be living? I’ll never know.
The BBQ began at 6:30pm. This is the first time I had an Australia style BBQ. People in Taiwan also have BBQ when it comes to the Chinese moon festival. But the foods are totally different here. In Taiwan, we will marinade the meat before we cook it. Most common is pork. In Australia, we cook beef and drink beers and wine before (and while) we cook. We also have salad and fresh vegetables. We chatted and laughed. I asked Damian some questions about his university. I always want to know the difference between other country’s universities and ours. Students in the university in Taiwan usually sit in front of the computer and play the computer games or use the BBS for 6.7 hours everyday. I have to admit that although I didn’t play computer game, I always used the BBS more than 6 hours a day. It is really harmful for my eyes and a waste of time. I think I will have to quite it when I return to Taiwan. Damian said he would show me his university when we meet each other in Perth. That will be another interesting experience for me. We are going to have a test on 11/30. When we pass the test, we will be official turtle trackers. We will receive 2 T-shirts and a hat with the Ningaloo Turtle Program emblem on it. I always want a new hat. Hopefully I can pass the test.
